county fairs..

The lovely wife just came back, was off to the county fair with some of her pals.. She got one blue ribbon this time.. and she is so disappointed.. gee, I did not get anything..one of these years I must enter something..

But I do think the demise of the county fairs is a sad event.. as a kid, the fair was the big event of summer and entering animals or projects was a highlight.. now, the crowd is smaller , the buildings are not filled, projects are not in the numbers they once were..

Sad to see a part of traditional living fade away..

We have a few counties which have a fair that is still a fine event, but getting to be only a few..

You are correct that County Fairs should be a big thing. They are an American Institution and a Family Event. What can I know though. I live in a state that has Rodeo as a Degree and the first three days of hunting season are excused absences for kids who go hunting. Washington County Fair has been moved to April before the weather gets warm. We are in our triple digit weather now so it is nice that the Fair was moved to a cold weather month.
My brother in California was involved in the County Fair where he lives for many years but age has slowed him down and he just visits now. His number 3 son is very active in the Fair however and stays on the grounds in a trailer for the whole week of the Fair.

You're right. As a kid, it was the greatest thing ever. Now there is not much going on except outrageously high prices for a corn dog, and carnie rip offs.
We did all of the animal showing stuff with the kids, and enjoyed it a lot. My kids won 1st, and second in showmanship the very first year dairy goats were allowed here. My daughter took second because she was chewing gum after I had told her to spit it out before going in the ring.
Did you ever raise, and show a Kapon?
Boy, was that different!! Made for a delicious bird after the show though.

We did not do that for hunting as I recall, but I do recall of at least one 'big kid', who stopped in to tell the school office he would not be in because of going hunting.

April seems a ridiculous time to have a fair, anywhere in our country..

I can relate to your brother.. while I never matched my wife involvement, I did show a sheep as a kid. One year I even got a 3rd place white ribbon..

Up in this neck of the wood we have had mostly cool weather for summer.. we did have 4 consecutive days of 90 degrees while the snow was still piled very high.. may have been a record melt in those few days.. but now the 50 degree nights and 70/80 degree days are going and starting sunday we will have the mid to upper 90s as the hot summer comes to us as well..

Have a nice evening and thanks for the input..

If I re-open the pages of Ray Bradburys
" Dandelion Wine " I'm certain Douglas Spalding his self could come alive ,and walk me to his grandma's house ,for some cool tea on their porch ,

It is a quarter to eight right now and over 100 degrees. I remember when we moved here someone told us about an Old Timer who said he had his reservation in for Hell when he died because he heard it was cooler there.

LOl, Your daughter sound so neat.. perfect little gal.. and 2nd place is very good..

Kapon??? The only thing I showed was a sheep... nice one and one year I got a white ribbon for 3rd place.. but I did not let it go to my head.. dad grumbled so much, I could not have managed anyway..

But I truly miss those days..

Be the way, did you "fix" the Kapon yourself?? been told that is a real job..

Have a nice evening and stay cool...

How are you keeping up with all your walking in all the heat?? we have been cool for the last couple weeks but no rain until yesterday.. near on inch... that is nearly all from the start of May.. We get a shot of mid 90s starting on sun/monday... that is real hot for us..

We got the kampons from the 4-H people. They were already "fixed". I just had to poke them with a large needle every night for a week or so to let the air out from between the skin, and body. Then feed them a really crazy diet, and babysit them till show time.

The heat.....I drink my weight in water, and sweat all over people's mail.
I actually had a bird poop on the mail in my hand the other day. That was different!
