MAGA republicans believe Joe Biden is the worst President in US history and the country is collapsing. What do Europeans think of him as he attends the NATO summit?

Joe Biden is what I suspect many Europeans would think of as an old-school politician: experienced, capable, and fully understanding that everything works better when we work together, something that it seems many Americans (particularly those further on the right wing) simply don’t get. Any good politician knows that compromise and agreement between disparate groups is what gets things done - and Biden is definitely in-the-know on that front.

Since we’re talking about NATO, let’s be realistic here: three years ago, the alliance was moving closer and closer to collapsing. Donald Trump had alienated a significant number of US allies, and was embracing Vladimir Putin far moreso than any of the US’ traditional friends. The United States had withdrawn from numerous international treaties of which Russia had also been a signatory, and it was clear from Trump’s xenophobic and isolationist rhetoric that he would ultimately prefer to pull the US out of NATO altogether - which probably would see the alliance collapse, or at least re-form along different lines.

With Angela Merkel having left office, I suspect Vladimir Putin thought the time would be ripe for an invasion of Ukraine: his greatest European rival was no longer an issue, and the European Union was starting to fracture (particularly with Brexit taking place, and major domestic problems in France). My suspicion is that Putin was using Trump as a tool: his role was to fracture the United States, and create enough internal domestic issues that the US would be neutralised, such that it wouldn’t come to the aid of Ukraine.

However…Joe Biden is the one who has stepped up and pulled the NATO alliance together. He’s been unwavering in his support of Ukraine, encouraging allies to provide funds, weapons and supplies to enable the Ukrainian people to fight back effectively, and so far, it’s proven to be devastatingly effective. Under his leadership, we’ve seen Finland and now Sweden joining NATO, strengthening an alliance that Putin thought was collapsing, and the Russian Federation has been found lacking, a paper tiger that hasn’t been able to secure a nation that (or so we’d all thought prior to the invasion) hadn’t anywhere near the force nor resources to properly repel them.

What do Europeans think of Joe Biden? I can’t speak for everyone, but the evidence seems clear: Joe Biden is a proper leader, of the sort that Americans should be rallying around. He’s accomplished that with NATO, whilst simultaneously ushering in a strong economic recovery for the US, pushing to invest in infrastructure and renewable energy, lowering the prices of medications (which, let’s be honest, are extortionate on the US market)…there’s an awful lot that we could talk about, but the key point is that Biden has proven himself to be a highly effective administrator, and is governing the US as a President is supposed to. Considering his predecessor, I’d say he’s doing a great job.

Yes, as you say, the Republican Party continues their denigration of the President, but doing so largely on the basis of innuendo and slander: they’ve presented nothing cohesive in opposition, and despite having control over the House, they’ve passed no major legislation of their own to rival anything that Biden is doing. Their sole duty, at this point in time, seems to be to throw mud at the President whilst doing their level best to obstruct - thus, they’re trying to tear down rather than build. And a United States in her current position needs builders and reformers, not regressive obstructionists.

As for “the country is collapsing”, I’m sure if a Republican became President, they’d change their tune inside of twenty-four hours. It’d no longer be collapsing: rather, it’d suddenly be a new and shiny America, all the problems that the GOP claims just vanishing overnight, just as they supposedly did under the Trump Administration. It’s all smoke-and-mirrors: the sort of disinformed demagoguery that many Europeans witnessed back in the 1930’s and 40′s, as well as in the US during the days of McCarthyism and the “Red Scare”.

From all that I’ve seen over the past two years, I can say that with Joe Biden as President, the United States is moving towards restoring faith in her alliances, and proving itself more likely to meet her potential. We know we can trust Biden, and we know that whilst he has the US’ interests at heart, he’s cognizant of the reality that the US cannot isolate itself from her allies and friends. With Biden, we see an American leader, someone we listen to, and who will listen in turn. We don’t laugh at him, we don’t hold him in contempt, and we think he’s on the right track - and certainly far moreso than the last guy, a man who disgraced his office, his country and himself.

With respects to the Republican Party…they’d be better actually trying to build than keeping tearing things down. If, as they say, the United States is collapsing, they’re the ones doing their level best to accelerate that collapse, largely because their faith in democracy only exists when they win. They seem perfectly happy to sabotage the security of their nation and the US’ alliances if only it gives them political power - and even when they’ve got it, it seems that their sole intent is to bring the US Government down in order to enrich their corporate sponsors and themselves. I don’t care much for f*****ts, but of all the world’s politicians, they’re the closest thing to it.

And, from where I’m sitting, as long as Joe Biden is holding them back from bringing that horror into the 21st Century, I’m behind him all the way. You’ll find most Europeans far prefer his vision for America than that of his opposition.

I've known for a very long time that slatten tries to portray himself as an America-loving voice of reason but he is actually a wolf in sheep's clothing.

On this one, especially so. But, this being America, everyone is entitled to their own thinking.
