The case that was about independent legislatures was the hottest case...the concept was an example of conservative overreach that would have turned constitutional law in regards to the three branches of government upside down.
This thing literally would have made state courts all the way up to their supreme courts irrelevant, and given total control to legislatures, meaning if they did something unconstitutional there would have been no place to check that abuse of power...they would be able to male laws that were so far away from constitutional laws that there would be no reason to have it anymore.
This was fortunately so far away from reality that even this conservative court had to follow the constitution and protect courts against state legislatures.

This had to do with gerrymandering congressional districts to draw maps, determine how many representatives can be available for e******n and determining who has more authority over e******n laws. The SCOTUS majority opinion protected the sanctity of the court's decisions unless a law was written in the State's Constitution.
