I was in the military, I entered during the Vietnam War...I did not go into the military to fight for the country, in fact I never even knew anyone that ever said or implied that that had anything to do with it. I'm not saying that there weren't people who did, and during world war II that was a huge motivator to fight for and to protect the country.
Vietnam era and beyond...rarely, just flat rarely, reasons being...
...high school ended, parents (dads) booting them out, no other choices
...couldn't find a job, no choices
...joined with an intentional goal of getting training that could be used after a tour or two in the military
...looked like a good career with retirement in 20 years and time to get a good job
...intentions of using schooling benefits to help pay for a degree
This is the reality, it is what it is. The military, especially the army and marines got a large share of people who were booted out of their parent's homes without a job or prospects...deadbeats might be a bit harsh but it can fit with certain people.
Oh, and people will want to know what category I was in...
got booted out of school, my dad declared I wasn't staying at home, leaving the military as an only option.
High scores in the entrance exam opened the door for the highest levels of training and clearances

The Draft was also a motivating factor .
I joined to protect our country and values. I graduated from high school one year early, could have been 2 but didn't want to graduate at 16, went to college for a year and then joined the 75th Ranger Regiment.
Not everybody thinks like you do, and not everyone h**es America either. Most in SOG joined to defend our country, not for personal gain. We all sacrificed and we all did the jobs nobody else wanted to do, or could do. Even though we never lost any battles I'm afraid we lost the war. While we were protecting our country from foreign threats our country was being defeated from within.

Well, glory be, you're a real American hero, arncha?
Could you show us your medals for gallantry in action, above and beyond the call of duty,
silver stars, purple hearts, stuff like that?
Woody is right in that we all didn't join to become John Wayne and win wars. But many really discovered patriotism while serving. And many died for our freedom or suffered serious injuries. And we all did serve and fight under one f**g, the American F**g. The real f**g to be proud of. Not the f*g f**g the non veteran head of the VA waves and authorizes. What a d********g POS.
