Speaking of justice, Rene was a very small young girl and had had a real battle with a much larger black girl hurdling in track and field. In one big meet she had had the fastest preliminary time so was running in the 4th lane while her "friend" was in 5. When they came out of the curve the big one went flying to the side and into a wall. I asked her why she hit the other kid so hard and her only answer was that she was in my lane and I moved her out of it. Race wasn't at all involved since they never said or did anything that indicated they either thought of the other as being another race.

Later that summer they were in the finals of the 100 hurdles and the cousin of Jill said there was no way that little honky could run as fast as she had the week before. Jill said if they said she did she probably did. At the finish they were about 5 yards ahead of the honky caller and had to be photo finished to pick the winner.

She was always one tough kid, physically speaking. I always had her practice hurdles on the outside lane and one day she hit a hurdle and came down hard on hands and knees. After she stood around dripping blood from each abraded site for a couple of minutes she just said, "I guess you want me to go again" and went to the starting line. She knew I would demand that because I never was sure you could allow a kid to not go again immediately and not be scared. Yep, she was a tough kid and just as tough in college and the world of work.

I may have screwed that up a bit since it was 100 meter hurdles not 100 hurdles. She ran at least that many every day in practice considering that she ran 400 meter hurdles in summer and 300 meter ones during school.

I had another girl just after she left us who ran both hurdle races and the 800 meter dash. Now she put in some miles in practice and then ran around the section at home every evening.

Rene played the alto sax pretty well till she got out of high school and then didn't really have time to practice with indoor track in the winter and outdoor in the summer. She loved running so much that she never stopped until she got in the late forties and her knees gave out.

I was so fortunate as to have had three great hurdlers in a span of 7 years and all of them had those characteristics. The second one was a big girl who had been a fair sprinter as a freshmen and with summer workouts with Rene decided she wanted to try hurdling. I was sure she couldn't do it but in age group competition she didn't lose a race till the national championships. She worked so hard to be the best but was never really dejected when she couldn't win.

The third of them was the best all round athlete of the bunch and worked at least as hard. In the summer she came to practice at 7:00 am and practiced for Heptathlon (7 events) then worked, usually painting till 4:00 and then went home and an around the section. Yes, this kid was in outstanding shape although she was too slight to be a heptathlete which she excelled at.
