I couldn't undrestand just why this ballon couldn't be shot down over, say Montana or Kansas whear no one lives. Aparently the NSA wasn't too worried about the data it was collecting.

Not just collecting but t***smitting to the Chinese satellite and/or the Chinese space station.
It’s not much use shooting it down AFTER it’s completed it’s mission.

If they shoot it down they will have to admit that is isn't a Chinese spy satellite and that the Chinese weren't lying when they said it was a wayward weather balloon. At the very least somebody gonna be found a liar if it is shot down and recovered.

It was first identified over Alaska. It went over my home about 90 minutes ago. I hope the CCP cameras are really good. I flipped it both birds. Much more than the U.S. government did. Ask yourself why the government allowed it to travel across the entire United States.
