Really? I thought the House sent their approved impeachment charges to the Senate for trial. I thought it was the Senate that had to acquit or convict someone for impeachment. The Chief Justice acts as judge and the senate acts as jury...or so I thought.

Pretty much correct. The House is more like a Grand Jury and the Senate is the actual trial.
