The left erupted in anger after a judge on Thursday ruled against lifting an injunction against the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) continued review of classified documents. These were seized in the FBI’s unprecedented raid of former President Donald Trump’s Florida home. Trump’s request for an independent master to oversee the documents also moved forward when U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon appointed a senior New York judge for that role.
In her ten-page decision, Cannon wrote that the Court “does not find it appropriate to accept the Government’s conclusions” without review by the independent special master.
In effect, this puts the brakes on the DOJ’s investigation until the special master has had time to go through the documents and decide on several issues. Those include executive privilege and attorney-client privilege as argued by Trump’s legal team.
The former president declared that within his power as chief executive he gave a general order to declassify every document that was brought to his Florida home at Mar-a-Lago. But critics decry the reasoning, claiming that he did not follow proper protocols in doing so. Liberals predictably were not happy. The object of their intense anger was Judge Aileen Cannon, who most radicals feel is biased due to being appointed to the bench by Trump.
Never mind that all judges were appointed by someone. Anyone sent to their position by a Republican is questionable and possibly illegitimate.
Filmmaker Rob Reiner exploded that the judicial act is a taste of “autocracy,” saying that there is much more like it to come if Democrats do not maintain control of Congress.
MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell decried the “Trumpian” appointment of the independent special master.
And Democratic strategist Adam Parkhomenko claimed that it is “problematic” that the judge overseeing Trump’s request for a special master was appointed by Trump and a member of the Federalist Society.
New York federal judge Raymond Dearie, who was proposed by the Trump team, is the special master.
It is clear that Democrats view any judicial decision that goes against their stated goals as illegitimate. The special master is independent, as is the judiciary, and the process will play itself out with or without Democrats’ approval.
