And the railroad tracks. A century or more ago family legend has it that my relatives tended to walk the railroad tracks drunk, trusting to fortune that they would get home. Enough of them apparently made it because I am here. Nobody ever earned the nickname lucky.

I always limit myself when I know I’ll be driving. Never a concern on my part. Usually a drink before and a glass of wine during dinner out. If I know I might have more than a couple when our then someone else drives or I use a service. My major sipping takes place at home. Sometimes at a neighbors, the furthest being 3 blocks. I’m alway surprised how the distance changes. It takes me 5 minutes to walk there and 20 minutes to walk back home.

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

I can remember similar when I had neighbours to visit.

We go to wineries nowadays. We don't get too lit up. I usually drive as the responsible one and also the only one who knows the back roads. For 30 years I drove a van where these wineries are so I could find my way home blind folded. After years my wife still has no idea where the hell she is out there, but she can take me into some cities that she knows, and after years of riding shotgun with her I don't know how to get there or get home.

The wine always tastes better at the winery! Some good ones in Texas. My favorite is the Wedding Oak Winery in San Saba Texas. After that, the next stop down 16 is Coopers BBQ. One of the best!!

My grandfather worked for a railroad I think close to 50 years. He retired as an engineer. He was very old and still working when he took my older brother and me for a ride on an engine and let us drive the train. I had to be 4 or 5 years old, and it is one of my best memories of him.

I can believe it. Trains are most of us kids best dreams and memories.

Dreams are scary. I may have been around 11 when he passed away. The night before I heard he died, I had a dream of riding on his train with him. Or perhaps after all these years I made it up. I don't know. I try to give my grand kids good memories now. It's all we can do for those who come after us.

It's funny how much easier it is to get along with your grand kids than with your kids.

I haven't found that to be true but I know folks who have. You have an experience you need to work your head through. I highly recommend some good old counselling. I have had many "war" buddies who finally tried it and were so relieved to be free of their demons. I always thought their demons was my cooking.

Your ending comment brings to mind a quote usually attributed to Bennett Cerf: 'The reason children and their grandparents get along so well is that they share a common enemy."

Very good. However, if you want to see the bad side of human nature, get between a woman and her first grand child, especially if you are the other granny. Grandpas do not compete like that.
