We were leaving yesterday to deliver some children's toys to a friend when I spotted this dog curled up next to a tree, shivering in the rain. I approached him, and his ears went back, and he growled from his chest. I ain't dealing with that!! We made our appointment, and bought extra dog food on the way home, but he was gone when we got back. This morning, while I was getting ready for work, he was out by the barn pissing on a barrel. This guy is 2/3 as tall as a 55 gallon drum! Well, I fixed a big bowl of food, and tried to get him to come to me, but he wouldn't even consider it. I left the food for him, and went to work. Mrs. B. Spotted him about a half mile away just looking lost, and confused, but the food bowl at our house was empty. Maybe he'll come back, and we can help him.
Somebody dumped him out here. Just dumped him. It happens quite a bit, and straight up pisses me off!!
I'm guessing that this one is a mastiff of some type. He's huge!!
People just suck!!

People do suck. I’ve never understood how someone can dump a pet.

He's a beautiful dog, looks like a Mastiff but his ears look cut. I've raised two Mastiffs, they are loyal and protective dogs. Just take your time to get to know him, once that happens, you'll be his friend forever.

I have friends who are in the rural areas near me and they are always dealing with this kind of things. Generally it is cats, not dogs. I think what happens is that circumstances in people's lives change. Sometimes it is an old person dying or going into a home. Those who must deal with the situation don't know what to do with the pet.

Sometimes it is a person being evicted by a landlord who decides they want to rent to a relative, and now where the folks they evicted are going they will not allow pets. Not making excuses, just giving reasons.

Twice in the last decade my wife and I had to find homes for pets of relatives who became incapacitated and could no longer take care of them. One was a beagle, the other was a 9 foot reticulated Python. Believe it or not the snake was easier to place than the dog.

I get your point. Pets have always felt like family to me. Had a 12 foot python in college. He ate a lot of pilfered lab rats.

Arch,I was driving on I 12 a couple of days ago when a car passed me. He had to be doing 85 . The passenger
Had one of those little snow ball pups with the big black eyes. The no good mf threw that poor puppy out the window and just kept going. I have never seen anyone do such a crime to a small pet. I was disgusted but they were going to fast for me to get the license no.

I live in a hunting area and people treat their hunting dogs terrible. They half starve them to death so they will hunt better and then run them to death. I have had then show up at my house and I fed them and gave them water. They wear a locater collar and when the owner showed up they did not want to leave. It was sad to see them go.

We got very lucky with the Python. Someone in our little one horse town happened to be a reptile lady and had alligators and snakes. She came and got the snake. She even took a chinchilla.

The beagle was 9 years old and was a night mare to place. The real problem was nobody could take the dog temporarily, and for 3 weeks I would go to the home and feed him and clean up once or twice per day as I could. That went on until my wife finally found a shelter 30 miles away who agreed to take him, for $ 150 in fees. We had no v******tion records for him, which was part of the expense. I know I was quite desperate to do something with him, as nobody else in the relation would help me with him.

I would have never abandoned him, but having been in that situation, I can understand the temptation. I could not take him at my house.

I know they're great dogs. I've met several of the slobbery goobers.
In hindsight, I should have sent the wife on the errand, and tried to work on him some. Maybe make friends with him.
I, admit to having sort of a mental block any more with strange dogs due to my experiences at work, the endless "training sessions" on avoiding dog attacks, and hours of personally watching videos on dog behavior, and body language.
That deep, guttural rumble from his chest was enough to scare me off.
If I get another chance, I'll be more patient, and maybe make something happen with him.
It just breaks my heart that he's out there wandering around alone, and lost.
I don't want him, don't need him, but I'll be damned if I'll let him be alone, lost, and hungry!! If I can help it......

People who dump their pets should get a helicopter ride far into the wilderness with no food and be given the choice between a warm coat and a box of matches to help them survive.-- That is still a better chance than they gave a helpless animal who depends on humans to survive.

For now you're doing all you can do. I still think you might want to report the dog to animal control. It is just possible that he has a chip, that can identify his owner. Perhaps he is a runaway. On our local internet bulletin board, people are always posting lost dog pleas. One owner a couple towns over had a thousand dollar reward. Who knows if that dog you are dealing with is a runaway, you might get some money.

Most of the dogs I have shared my life with over the last 50 years were dumped. My personal opinion is--these sub-human cretins should be taken out into the woods/tied to a tick infested tree/ left there for 3 days without food/water...a taste of what they have done. One of my dogs that was dumped, I saw her run up to cars hoping they had come back for her/her 4 puppies. It took me about 6 weeks to actually have her/pups come to me. I found homes for the pups, but nobody, (but me,) wanted mom...she's one of the best dogs I have. God Bless you, Archie/Mrs. B...you already have helped, just by noticing/caring/trying to do something

Wow! Absolutely d********g! I live in an area where we all have 5-10 acres, dead-end road. Too many times sub-human creatures brought their dogs out here/dumped them. The sad t***h is in this case they calculated right...I end up taking in most of them over the years/finding homes for them, work the dumpers should have done.
