It used to be a nice place, until our county commissioners, with the connivance of the city council, ( a downright incestuous relationship) put their pointy heads together and hired a bunch of yuppie assholes from Atlanta to be a "zoning commission." These people are outrageous, stating you have to own at least 2 acres and have at least 200 feet of road frontage to build a home on your own damn property. Not only that, but the house has to be a minimum of 1200 square feet. Not that big, but it is still the height of arrogance for some pissant city boy from Atlanta to come in here and act like a Homeowners Association in a gated community. As long as your house is structurally sound and your plumbing works, it's none of their Goddamn business what you build on your own property. The reason I bring this up is that I know several people who could afford to buy a small lot and put a tralier or tiny home on it and stop paying outrageous rent, but simply cannot swing the financing to meet the yuppie guidelines. I ended up buying an older house that had been grandfathered in because I didn't fancy being a retiree with another damn mortgage. I was able to outright buy my place with money from the sale of my other home which was way too big for me and my wife. Just the two of us would probably end up getting lost in the old house.
My point being that making housing more affordable starts at the city and county level. Start breathing down the necks of your county commissioners. If a home is sound and sanitary and isn't an eyesore, its no one else's business how big it is or how much land it sits on. There are properties here where I live being almost given away because you can't build on them.
