For decades, the liberals have maintained that the way to solve our anemic educational system is to throw money at it.This "solution"hasn't worked because American schools continue to graduate masses of students who have poor sk**ls in reading, writing and math.
Pushing kids through the system, overcrowding and politically-correct education means, for one thing,a high dropout rate. Many young people are left with little grasp of the basic sk**ls(like reading and math)to cope in our complex world-let alone be accepted into college. Also at play are the powerful National Education Association and the National Teachers Association;both unions clearly seem to think more about politics, power and funding than education.
Most parents are going to be stuck with public schools because they haven't got the money for private schools, and charter schools are only for the fortunate few.
It is a problem for which I have no concrete answer, but reformers say that the short list includes better teachers(it is nearly impossible to oust a bad teacher in our public schools),better resources and support. There is hope for the system.
And it must be noted that there are many bright and talented young people who emerge from the system. They grasp what they can and run with it.
It is heartening to know that there are people striving to bring about reform. It is possible to give a child a quality education.Zeno
