A lieutenant general in Russia’s military was k**led in a strike near the city of Kherson on Friday, the highest-ranked officer to be k**led in the war so far.

Lt. Gen. Yakov Rezantsev is reportedly the seventh Russian general to die amid the country's invasion of Ukraine and the second of his rank to be k**led. Morale is believed to be low among Russian soldiers, with some troops fatally turning on their own commanders in recent days.

“Yakov Rezantsev is the second Russian lieutenant general to die in the war against Ukraine,” Ukraine’s defense ministry said Friday. “Torn apart Georgian Abkhazia, bombed-out Syria and finally inglorious elimination in Ukraine. This is becoming a typical track record of Russian generals.”

At the outset of the war, Rezantsev told his soldiers the invasion would be over within hours, prompting unrest among his subordinates as the war d**gged on for weeks, according to a conversation intercepted by the Ukrainian army. This led to increasingly low morale among troops, supposedly forcing senior officers to the front lines, according to the BBC.

Russian forces have lost other military officials over the last week, with at least one commanding officer being run over with a tank driven by his own troops, according to local journalist Roman Tsymbaliuk. Russian Col. Yuri Medvedev had both of his legs injured and was then t***sported to a hospital in Belarus, where some officials reportedly said he later died, according to the Washington Post.

As many as 40,000 Russian troops have been k**led, wounded, taken prisoner, or are missing, with estimates the country has already lost one-fifth of its combat forces during the first month of its invasion, a senior NATO military official told the Wall Street Journal earlier this week.

The Kremlin has only confirmed the death of one of its generals amid the war despite the estimate of seven from Ukrainian and Western officials.

Ukrainian forces have exemplified stronger-than-expected defense of their major cities. Russian forces have experienced setbacks this week, with the Pentagon reporting on Friday that Russia had lost full control of Kherson, the first major Ukrainian city its troops captured at the beginning of its weekslong invasion.
