Alaska lawmakers are assuring a Russian official who said the U.S. should return Alaska and other areas to Russia that it's just not happening.

Russian parliament member Oleg Matveychev on a TV program addressed waves of sanctions against Russia in response to the country’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, saying leaders should “think about r********ns.”

“The harm these sanctions caused us cost money. Return of possessions, including possessions of the Russian Empire, Soviet Union and even parts of Russia that are now occupied by the United States,” Matveychev said on Sunday, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

The host of the show asked Matveychev about the return of Alaska and Fort Ross, which was established by Russians in California, according to the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

“This is my next point – recognizing Alaska, Fort Ross and Antarctica,” Matveychev responded, according to the Anchorage Daily News. “We actually discovered it, so it rightfully belongs to us.”

The United States reached an agreement to purchase Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million in 1867. Alaska was admitted as a state in 1959.

Republican Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski balked at the statement, tweeting coverage of the comments and a gif of Taylor Swift with the caption “That will never, ever, ever happen!”

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy also responded to the comments, tweeting “Good luck with that!”

“Not if we have something to say about it. We have hundreds of thousands of armed Alaskans and military members that will see it differently,” he added.

When Russia wants something it just takes it. Why bother with historic claims. Only might matters. If Russia wants Alaska back, come and get it. They can barely deal with Ukraine. They will be lucky to hold onto the territories they have now over the next few decades. Their army has embarrassed itself.

Every time someone says something bad about American politicians I can't help but think they didn't elect or re-elect themselves. Yeah, I know, you're Canadian and you don't v**e in the US, although I am sure the Democrats would be happy to register you. They'll even fill out a b****t in your name and sign it for you. Aren't they helpful?

You miss my salient point. The Russians are definitely winning in a purest sense. They have gotten the better of the battles. So yes from a tactical point of view, I know fancy terms from the movies, Russia is winning. The however, is that if you look strategically Russia is losing very badly.

First in the war of expectations, Russia is a second tier Super Power attacking a much weaker neighbor. They are at a stalemate. Sure the Ukrainians are much better than anyone imagined, but Russia should not be having this much trouble.

Second, Russia's stated reason for it's attack on Ukraine is the perceived threat from NATO. Russia has actively tried to break up the alliance and weaken the unity between the US of A and it's European Allies. Vlad has totally united and strengthened NATO. He has pushed European Countries into The US's arms. Strengthening NATO has been Putin's greatest strategic blunder.

Third, a country's military is funded by it's economy. Russia's economy is becoming a shambles. China will not be able to fully replace the West as Russia's trading partner. It will take a lot of time to switch selling all of that gas from west to east to China. Yes China gets Russian gas now, but not in the amounts Russia needs to sell to replace it's lost markets in Germany and the rest of Europe.

The response was to laugh and ask if they were doing drugs, it didn't warrant the respect of a response other than derision.
