Two polls from the US provide insight into the affects of wide-scale mainstream media propaganda. This is truly a wild set of facts.

I have made it a personal policy for many years, to avoid committing, to any idea, to such a degree that makes reversing my opinion difficult or impossible. In other words, I have accepted the possibility that even the most ardent stand the chance of being wrong. That doesn't mean I won't take a stand. I almost always do. What I don't do is invest my ego in that position. If the information on which I base a conclusion is wrong, my conclusion will also be wrong.

Many people, here and everywhere I have been, tend to over-commit to an idea, often because of peer pressure. That results in their inability accept new information if it contradicts their personal commitments.

When so many people have bad information, and they are so politically committed to the goal that that information supports, authoritarianism is their only out. If they were wrong, they can then say some variation of, "Don't blame me,(I wasn't the only one that got fooled; see, it wasn't my fault; they made me do it; what choice did I have)".

Authoritarianism provides the only viable excuse to an embarrassing level of ignorance and cowardice.
