On September 16, the Senate Committees on Appropriations and Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions held a hearing to discuss the resources needed to address the outbreak. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) asked NIH representative Anthony F***i about sequestration's effect on the efforts.

"If even modest investments had been made…the current Ebola epidemic could have been detected earlier, and it could have been identified and contained."

"I have to tell you honestly it's been a significant impact on us," said F***i. "It has both in an acute and a chronic, insidious way eroded our ability to respond in the way that I and my colleagues would like to see us be able to respond to these emerging threats. And in my institute particularly, that's responsible for responding on the dime to an emerging infectious disease threat, this is particularly damaging."

Sequestration required the NIH to cut its budget by 5 percent, a total of $1.55 billion in 2013. Cuts were applied across all of its programs, affecting every area of medical research.

Dr. Beth Bell, director of the CDC's National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, testified before the committee, making a case for increased funding. Her department, which has led the US intervention in West Africa, was hit with a $13 million budget cut as a result of the cuts in 2013. Though appropriations increased in 2014 and are projected to rise further in 2015, the agency hasn't yet made up for the deficit—according to Bell, $100 million has already gone toward stopping the Ebola epidemic, and much more is needed. The United Nations estimates it will take over $600 million just to get the crisis under control.

Bell also argued that the epidemic could have been stopped if more had been done sooner to build global health security. International aid budgets were hit hard by the sequester, reducing global health programs by $411 million and USAID by $289 million. "If even modest investments had been made to build a public health infrastructure in West Africa previously, the current Ebola epidemic could have been detected earlier.

Oh For Goddsakes!...You really believe this crap that comes out these people? Man, i am so sick and tired of hearing the mantra, " if we had more money...."...Do these people even know about West Africa? I bet they have never been there.
And to blame sequester?!...Who caused the sequester? Who planned the sequester?
THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION! Don't believe me? Then explain why they had signs at the ready to close parks, monuments, et. al across the nation when the sequestration was not a done deal.
Yes, you don't have the signs made, distribute them nationwide overnight. No..Sorry. The signs uniformally said "Due to the sequestration.....".....First of all, to make the signs, you would have to contract out....Takes at least six months....They couldn't have used the signs from 17 years earlier...Because there weren't any!
Obama planned the sequestration months in advance.
Wake up marvin...You are being fed a pile..and believe it.
We could give billions of aid to these countries......They are corrupt to the core....I know...I lived there for a time...So, I think I am in a position to say these claims are just political posturing....Typical.
Liberals should go there and help...Yeah...I am sure many of the right minded folks here would pay for a carnival cruise ship trip for you....
Go do your dirty work there...Not here...But, you don't have the moral fiber....Sad.

Obama, who is really a centrist like Clinton, was suckered into budget-cutting, believing he could trade for Republican v**es on other issues. Without conservative budget-cutters pushing, he would never have come up with such nonsense.

Any money spent for Africa would have been spent here by US scientists.

Calm down, your veins are showing.

Well, It would require thought. I mean, C'mon! If I put the pieces of a a puzzle together, I make the picture. Wh**ever picture it is, it is clear. It seems to me, that given the lack of pieces, the whole puzzle just gets confusing for liberals like Marvin.
Ok, Ebola is bad..Get it.....But, I'll tell, you, I have traveled all through west Africa, lived in Sierra Leone....They are still tribal, yet, they drive Mercedes...Low end, but, the countryside is wh**ever tribe is or wants to move in....When there is riches to be had, the strong armed take over.
They don't care about their own health, moreso, they care about taking the wealth instead of investing in infrastructure for the people...Now, that may sound like a liberal philosophy, but, it is not. It is pragmatic.
Just ask the question..Why do these v***ses seem to originate in west Africa? Dengue fever? Ebola?.....The resources are being abused and no amount of American money is going to make them retreat form what they have always done...Fight...Trade on dictator for another and ignore their people.

Marvin, my veins are fine! I am just laughing so hard at you last comment! Obama a centrist?? Busting my gut on that one! I will say that Obama is a sucker, though. He is a sucker for left wing marxist, philosophy and a sucker for a good golf course. I guess you didn't read my post and try to refute the fact that he was was the one that planned the sequester? You can't. The obvious evidence is too strong. So, if a president wanted to negotiate, why would the plan for sequestration be already in place? It was ALL political, Marvin. Look, he has the main stream media in his corner, so, all he had to do was say and imply it was the obstinate Republicans....Smarter people can figure this out. You, are not, or wanting to be, a smart one. Do you ever watch Columbo? " You know, Mr. Obama....There's just a couple of things that have been bothering me"....
There are more than a couple of things.......
