Wisdom from Superman's Mom

There is a scene in Man of Steel in which a young Clark Kent first discovers his powers. He is in elementary school, and the teacher asks him a simple question. Right in the moment, all of his senses triggers at once.

Suddenly, he sees not just people appearance, but their insides, bones, and organs. He hears even the faintest noise far, far away. Overwhelmed with all the impressions, Clark runs away and hides.

A few minutes later, the whole class is gathered outside the supply closet. Clark locks himself inside. Eventually, his mom arrives on the scene. At first, he isn't willing to let her in.

Clark cries and screams helplessly - "Mom, the world is too big for me to fight."

Then, Martha Kent shares a piece of advice that could only ever make sense coming from a loving, compassionate mother:

"Then, make it small son, make it small."

" Honey, just focus on my voice. Pretend it's an island, out in the ocean. Can you see it?"

"I see it."

"Then swim towards it honey."

Once he concentrated on the one thing right in front of him- his mom, Clark calmed down and left the closet. If you want to be happy, you must focus on one thing at a time.

In our modern world, Clark Kent isn't the only one who is hypersensitive. It's all of us.

Social media, the internet, our state of constant connection - we share and communicate so much, we too can see other people insides . Their thoughts, feelings and wishes. We create a lot of noise when we share these things and we can hear the noise of others even if they make it far-away.

The world is too big. There is too much of everything. To many projects to tackle. Too many people to meet. Too many places to go, shows to watch, messages to answer and books to read.

Often, sadness is overwhelmed in disguise. We know we can never live it all. Someone will be always disappointed with their choices. Even if it's just ourselves.

Don't worry about the vastness out there. It does nothing for you. Just remember to make the world small according to your comfort.

When you feel overwhelmed, take a moment. Breathe. Calm down. Get quiet inside your mind.

Home your senses. Focus. Zoom in one the one thing that matters. One voice. One task. One minute. Do it again and again.

Yes, it's true. The world is too big. But there's always enough room for you. You can carve out your own space.

Find your island. Make it small. And then swim towards it.

For myself I love the mountains that enclose us. Not to be mean but I went across west Texas once and it was like Clark Kent must have felt. I wasn't happy because there were no mountains. I decided Texas is flatter than the ocean. Would be great country for driving tanks but for me I want and need the mountains to surround wherever I am. Guess that is why God mad so many different landscapes. Thanks for reminding us that we all need to feel safe.
