Reading the N&O’s special section on public education was heartbreaking. The Republicans who’ve controlled the N.C. General Assembly for the last 10 years have been successful at destroying our public education system.

They have starved the system and t***sferred money out of it to support charter schools and scholarships for parents who want to put their children in religious schools.

They also ended a model program aimed at bringing more young people into the teaching profession. They did away with funding for teaching assistants and refused to add money for nurses and social workers.

Then, they say our public school system is inadequate. Seems to me their refusal to invest in our schools made them inadequate. And unsafe — since Republicans legislators have refused to invest in capital expenditures too.

Our early leaders understood how important education was to building and maintaining a democratic form of government. It’s time that the Republicans stopped dismantling our public institutions and fought for what’s best for all of us — starting with well-funded, well-resourced public schools.

For over a year now, Americans have been up in arms over the Obama administration’s unconstitutional efforts to bribe and bludgeon state governments into surrendering control over K-12 education through the controversial so-called “Common Core” national standards — and the outrage is still growing. A peek beneath the surface, however, reveals that the nationalization of American schools is actually just one component of a much broader global agenda being pushed by the Obama administration, the United Nations, Bill Gates, and others: the globalization of education.

In fact, just this week, an invitation-only conference hosted by former Florida Governor and pro-Common Core ringleader Jeb Bush entitled “Globalization of Higher Education” took place in Texas. Among the attendees: Hillary Clinton, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, former World Bank President Robert Zoellick, UNESCO officials, university presidents, and more. While higher education appears to be the next target of reformers, the globalization of K-12 schooling is on the verge of completion — at least if the American people do not rise up and stop it.

One solution would be to fund privately owned schools which would have to compete for both staff and students. More choice and more freedom usually produce better results.

In Arizona the funds follow the students. I can, and have, sent my children to charter schools. Better education and no PC crap. If parents want better schools, and school choice, this is the solution. The only people hurt by this policy is the teachers unions, they lose most of their control and power. That's why it won't happen nationally, in my opinion.
