A lot of it depends on the criminal you are talking about. The vast majority of street thugs, gangs, home invaders, etc, use stolen weapons. Stealing and selling guns is big business for some gangs. These criminals do not want attention. They are in it for the profit.
Mass shooters are a horse of a different color. Most of them ARE seeking attention while also seeking revenge or venting anger. As I understand it, most of the weapons used by mass murderer are stolen or 'borrowed' from friends or family.

I have never seen in writing, heard it said, or even caught wind of any member of any political party or ideological belief - republican, democrat, independent, socialist, liberal, conservative, Christian, Jew, or law abiding gun owner - propose, advocate, promote or demand that "every Tom, Dick and Susan" should have "access to all the guns and ammo they want".

I does indeed work. I lived in a town of 800 people and 700 of them were Indians. The towns police chief was ambushed and nearly every bone in his body was broken. I was living there at the time working in a sawmill. The city council requested a resident deputy from the Sheriffs department and they refused. The state police would not send a patrolman into town. We were on our own. The city council passed an ordinance that still stands to day that every adult head of household must have a loaded firearm in their possession or receive a $150 fine. They went door to door and I showed them my deer rifle. they instructed me to load it and put one in the chamber. They wanted me to leave the safety off. Well the town did calm down with everybody packing sidearms and having locked and loaded rifles and shotguns on hand. Just my experience.
