It's only a matter of scale

Everyone is familiar with spacecraft these days. They understand that there is a finite amount if air, food and water on each spacecraft. The ISS ( not to be confused with ISIS ) can only continue it's operations, through repeated supply spacecraft missions. Without more air, water and food being supplied, the Astronauts will die.

The Earth - is a spacecraft, a biological and geological spacecraft. As with any other spacecraft, our air, water and food - is finite. There is no way to get more water. What we've got, is all there will ever be. We use water on a monumental scale and much of it is converted to other molecules, which are not replaced. Chances are, we'll run out of drinkable water, before we run out of oil.

Your theory is correct, and some of your conclusions. It is not drinkable water we run out of. It is fresh water, especially needed for our farmers. Which runs us out of food. Therein lies the real problems.

Farmers can use wastewater for irrigation. We can't drink that.
