I feel these military leaders, China, Russia, and America have conversations that would curl the hair of the average citizen everyday. It's better they have an on-going conversation than to be shooting in the dark. So Woodward gets wind of one such exchange, and the media goes full-tilt to cover it. Distraction ? In my book, yes. The leaders, and the fall-guy biden, screwed the pooch on Afghanistan, and want it to go away.

My guess is that he stuck to t***h and told the Chinese what they already knew, that trump was an unhinged madman, and that he had their back...that he was intervening in trump's ability to launch a first strike.
