Custer was a Dem and he was planning to enter the race in 1876. His not following orders was so that he could achieve a big win over the Sioux and Cheyenne which would give a big boost in the Dem Primaries of the year and he was hoping a win against them would put him in the White House. His wife, Libby, spent the rest of her life making Custer a hero and making Major Reno the bad guy who did not come to Custer's aid.
