I would have to wonder if the man outside the Walmart store is employed and where. In ND that $17 per hour wouldn't sound so good to the few unemployed people there. Oil booms do things like that to other businesses and Obama hasn't stopped the ND growth of oil business.

I got a kick out of the words about what Walmart said was causing its problems. A delay in income tax refund checks, challenging weather conditions, less grocery inflation than expected, and the payroll tax increase” were all said to have created “considerable headwinds” for America’s No. 1 retailer.

I might have to say something about the left lean of Slate that I think I see most of the time.

WalMart has grown tremendously in recent years, and now covers the earth. Something like 90% of US citizens are within 15 miles of a WalMart.

Methinks WalMart can afford a slight cutback in their business, and it may allow some space for smaller retailers to gain a niche in the market.

The closest Walmart to me is 55 miles. There is one that is 67 miles away and another that is about 65 miles away. There is a very grand one about 90 miles away, also.

Walmart was always located only in some of our smaller towns and then about 10 or 15 years ago they started to build in larger cities. I really wonder how many people know about we of the smaller population areas and how far we have to go to a Walmart.

That is a shame that you must go so far away to a Walmart store.

I have to shop where I can find the best bargains. And Walmart is the place to go. Here in the east they are everywhere. A lot of people resent Walmart probably because the founders are so wealthy. And that they drive the small stores out of business, which Is true.

I do not think they are in trouble. Then way things are going today, we have no choice but to look out for ourselves with the finances we have, which is why Walmart will never go out of business. Probably more lies and propaganda.

Nope, in fact most of the land in this county is cattle pasture and that is where we live. I think you may find that many people in Kansas very far west of Wichita get to go some super distances to things like that.

As usual Slate Mag, as do others, total places a VERY misleading headline atop the story.

It takes could a few paragraphs before the realization comes it is about their grocery division not Wal Mart overall. Their overall retail sales were up. Even mentioning Amazon is laughable. Who really buys food from Amazon?

I v**e  on this story.

You really have to work your way through this story. Wal Mart as a whole is doing quite well. In fact, the loss was in their grocery division not retail. It was buried VERY deep in the story.

I h**e to say this but a number of the progs on the forum I got booted out of talked a lot about buying groceries from Amazon because they were delivered to their door. I much prefer to buy most of our groceries from Walmart though.

I saw the part of that article you are talking about but just didn't want to play games with THEM about it.

I do some Amazon; however, never thought about food products from them. It was confusing to me when the article mentioned Amazon and food. We have. Costco very close by. In my house, my meals tend to double and either go two nights or freeze for another time.

We are thankful for Walmart. It has saved us money which is greatly needed in these very bad times trying to hold heads up over the waters trying to drown us. Everyone who is in business has a great deal of mess to contend with to make it work and is entitled to reasonable profits. Walmart does share and gives generously where needed from what I have read. I do believe it has been wrong to push all the small businesses out of business. Competition is very good and is needed. Buying on line made life easier for the over worked and tired and especially for the disabled but one could not view and feel the product. Going to the store to shop is a healthy excursion which the mostly home bound people do need. The sales tax that now must be applied on the Internet purchases will be fairer even though we did enjoy not paying it for a long time. God bless us all especially our leaders and lawmakers who could be doing 100percent better.

If Wal-Mart's in trouble, someone should tell Warren Buffett. He just increased his holdings in the company.

The only area of loss was the grocery division. It was quite hard trudging through the article. Once the article started a comparison with Whole Foods, I skipped slightly forward. The retail section had a nice increase.
