As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
'Til the pain is so big you feel nothing at all

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They h**e you if you're clever and they despise a fool
'Til you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for 20 odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function, you're so full of fear

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion, and sex, and T.V.
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you k**l
If you want to be like the folks on the hill

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

Yes, John Lennon. They actually played it full & unedited on the old WEEI-FM in Boston. It's a troubling message but John, deftly, included himself in the target of his contempt, unlike liberals who have always held themselves as entitled to lecture everyone else.

He did something similar in his song ‘God.’ He said, “…I don’t believe in Elvis…,” yet, in a tape of a live concert, around the same time, he launched into “Hound Dog,” shouting out, “Awhhh Elvis, we just love you, baby.” I think he was expressing the ambivalence we all feel at various times about many things.

He was obviously a man in self-conflict but, somehow, I think he would have turned or returned to that simplest of messages embodied in Christ’s love. Is the Church perfect? Of course, not. But Jesus’ message remains; simple, perfect and immutable.

He dead was wrong about Christ.

"Religion" is a two-edged sword as history tells. To him Hinduism was religion and we know what happened with the Maharishi.

Everything else is pretty spot-on.

There was that time when John made his controversial statement that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus but he didn’t reject Him. At Maharishi’s retreat he did realize that the supposed holy man was a con artist and they’d been had.

He found out that this guru with his keys to cosmic happiness was busily engaged on the side, trying to seduce Mia Farrow, who was among the students(?), but marks might be a better term . I’ve read that the only compensation he required was one week’s salary of those who attended his wondrous seminars.

The Beatles were at the height of their fame and I don’t think their tuition was tax deductible nor were the tuitions of the others which included not only Farrow but also, the singer & Beatle pal, Donovan, Brian Wilson & several Beach Boys. HHHMMM!

Just one week’s salary from each of them? Wow. Pretty good haul.

John confronted him and challenged him to demonstrate his omnipotence. One source reported that The Beatles left the compound with bullets whizzing overhead, a la Jonestown.

Later George and Paul traveled to meet him and request that he cease using their names in his publicity ads. He sat there giggling during the entire meeting. When they left, George, who had been the driving force in The Beatles’ pursuit of Indian mysticism, must have still been under the Maharishi’s sway; he told Paul he’s not of this world. (Sure he wasn’t but he had a team of international lawyers & accountants working for him.)

The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was one of the greatest con men in history, right up there with the guy who sold the Eiffel Tower, twice.

I do think John would have come to Christianity but not with any organized religion.

Could be. At any rate he also figured out c*******m was a bunch of bulls**t. I think he may have been a bit shell-shocked, spiritually speaking, after finding out so much of his idealism was impractical and impossible for the simple fact of human nature.
