Shaping The Battlefield

Part of the planning process before entering into a military engagement is called “shaping the battlefield.” It’s a strategic maneuver that aims to create a warfighting environment in which your strengths are optimized and your weaknesses are mitigated. With the e******n of Joe Biden as President, it appears that the war over healthcare in America is headed toward a four-year period of “shaping the battlefield” that will be conducted by all sides involved in the conflict.

Thankfully, due to the ineptness of the previous Trump administration, a critical period of Republican majority passed without any major damage to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It certainly wasn’t for lack of trying, but the strategy of “repeal” without a “replacement” was too much for even the Republicans to bear, not to mention the Supreme Court. However, even with quasi Democratic control of the Presidency, the House of Representatives and the Senate, it is debatable whether meaningful change in the ACA or the drive toward a true “public option” will be possible, at least during the first two years of a Biden administration.

There is a very tangible rationale for this downbeat situation and it’s called Americans for Prosperity (AFP). AFP is a political action committee (PAC) controlled by Charles Koch. For many years the “Koch Brothers” have advocated against a “public option” for healthcare and have worked relentlessly to undermine any expansion of Medicare or the existing ACA. However, the Brothers went through sort of a “quiet period” during the Trump Administration. Much of this probably had to do with the death of David Koch in 2019, a common distaste for Trumpism, and the never-ending drama of politics during the Trump administration. For those of us who firmly believe in massive healthcare reform, we essentially came out of 2017 to 2020 with the status quo, which is a much better situation than it could have been.

The problem now, however, is that Charles Koch and the AFP are quietly shaping the battlefield for a healthcare showdown. AFP is actively lobbying at the state and federal level for a “personal option” and the effort is comprehensive, well thought out, and has nearly unlimited financial resources. AFP is suggesting that a “personal option” that consists of a series of legislative changes that promote tax credits, increases in health savings accounts, and eliminating regulations is better than a government-run healthcare system that is all-inclusive.

Donate

“when millions of americans face a simple decision as to whether or not they can afford to go to the doctor, the decision is extremely material and consequential. the choice between healthcare and bankruptcy is not a libertarian theory that can be solved with a few hundred dollars more in a health savings account.”

AFP’s mandate is a mirror image of Charles Koch’s Libertarian principles of “individual freedoms” but it assumes that individuals have a choice of options in which a decision for one or the other results in a non-material opportunity cost. Unfortunately, our current healthcare system does not offer these kinds of choices. Our only choice is to “have or to have not.” When millions of Americans face a simple decision as to whether or not they can afford to go to the doctor, the decision is extremely material and consequential. The choice between healthcare and bankruptcy is not a Libertarian theory that can be solved with a few hundred dollars more in a health savings account.

Both sides of the political aisle are being inundated with AFP propaganda, an effort that only began in earnest in late 2020. So, Mr. Koch is back in the game after a four year slumber and they are trying to “shape the battlefield”; a tactic that was absent during the previous administration when no alternative to the ACA was provided by the Republicans. But now, and for the foreseeable future, the “personal option” will gain traction and the debate will begin to boil down to an easily manageable battle of the catch phrases of “personal” vs. “public.” It’s a smart move by AFP and their messaging is clear and concise – have control of your own destiny or be controlled by the government. This will permeate the political arena for the near term and provides an alternative that 2017 to 2020 never offered.

Democrats and Republicans must be challenged with a clearer, more concise message on the “public option” and it needs to start happening now. It is easy to determine who will win the battle when only one side takes the initiative to “shape the battlefield” prior to beginning the conflict. Healthcare was the number one priority for v**ers in 2020 and the 2018 mid-terms. Action needs to be taken now because the battlefield for healthcare will be the 2022 e******ns. AFP has a head start and will show no mercy just because the Biden administration is dealing with C***D, v**er rights, and infrastructure bills. AFP will rally their forces during these distractions, win a few state-level skirmishes related to state Medicare expansion and slowly but surely take the higher ground unless those of us on the “public” side of the equation show an equally determined counter-attack. President Biden is marketing “bold change” and courage of conviction. Now is the time to back it up with resources and action or else we will begin the battle at the extreme disadvantage of competing on the enemy’s battlefield that has been prepped and shaped for two years without a challenge.

Milusia, for your own sanity, get Koch out of you head. He has no interest in this fiasco, not a damn thing to gain.

I am still waiting for my $2,500/savings & want my doctor back plus my $12,000/year premiums, $12,000 deductible, 20% copay.

Americans for prosperity is Koch’s baby.
He lives. Like it or not. ALEC is still writing laws for Republican state legislatures to v**e for.
He has been a detriment to this country and still is, by his own accord in his new book.
I forget the name of.
Don’t take my word for it. Just look at what he and his brother did to Kansas.
We are now in the end result of Koch’s influence beginning in 1980.
Not the liberals not the Dems not the Canadians.
The Koch’s !!!!

If you have any Canadian friends, ask them about their plan. The man who set it up said it was the worst thing he ever did in his life. If you have British friends, ask them.

The cost of healthcare is the culprit & until you liberal/l*****t/c*******ts understand that, what causes it, agree to change, getting the Govt to run it is not going to improve it.

Milusia, Kochs are not even in the same league with rich liberal/l*****ts/c*******ts. Zuckerburg pouring $400 million into the Senate race in GA on top of what he had already spent does not faze you but DeSousa ent to prison for $10,000.

Have you ever looked up what the Kochs spent on hospitals, research centers. I remember nurses walking out because a New York hospital accepted a $100 million gift. If I were the hospital administrator, they never would have been let back in.

The only battle plans coming out of Obama/Biden’s DOD are going to be plans on how many of which variety of sex challenged individuals, diverse races, i*****l a***ns are necessary to please wokeness at any given time & indoctrinating any loyalty to America out of all troops. I would not be surprised to see military unions under this Obama/Biden/Harris variety show.

Apparently you think leaving 1,000s of weapons, millions of rounds of ammo, and hundreds of armored vehicles in Afghanistan was okay. We don’t have what it takes to win a war anymore. We should have mopped up the Taliban the first 6 months we were there. Bagram should have been a big hole in the ground when we left. I wonder what the Taliban is going to with the $millions that were supposed to be spent on women studies.

The US had no problem spraying coca fields in Columbia w/o permission (something you might find interesting to read up on), but did not spray poppy fields in a war zone.

There is no inflation, but gas has just reached $2.00 increase since Jan., bacon is $8.99/12oz., sugar $1.00/lb. Lumber prices for dimension materials have settled out at just over twice what they were before, but sheet materials are still going up. Coatings, paints, adhesives are pushing 4x increases & rising.

Seems to me that Koch & Trump are the least of what you should be concerned about unless you are like Kevina, have a considerable amount of funds which protects you from the i***tic government policies you support.

In case you didn’t know , veterans get almost free healthcare at the VA.
You can get medications for 3 months at a cost of $8.00/ month.
You can see a doctor at 0800 sick call.
So many don’t use these benefits.
But that’s the socialist military for you trying to screw everybody making money on sick people out of exorbitant cash.
No lines. Eye exams/ free glasses.
Bernie Sanders has done quite a lot for veterans as the Senate Veterans Advocate or wh**ever you call it.
Free Healthcare for Veterans, go figure.
How can we stop this nonsense ?
Free Cpaps. /Sleep Studies.
I could go on but I know the anti socialists here won’t believe a word anyway.

Trump did more to straighten out VA than any other President & it is his VA pays doctors program that stopped year-2year waiting times. Guess you skipped over the reports of vets dying waiting for treatment, some committing suicide.

That VA situation was due to cuts in VA Appropriations by Republicans.
Sanders took that head on and changed it.
He’s done more that hasn’t been realized yet, but is in planning stages.
What you’re talking about was on the mend before trump even showed up. But true to form he was right there to take credit for someone else’s work.
A shyster , pure and simple.
Your hero.

Trump did nothing for VA , except put another crook in charge of it.
Filling the swamp again with trumps monsters.

In case you didn't know VA healthcare leaves a lot to be desired !

VA healthcare is not socialist care back in my day we were all drafted some volunteered many gave their lives many suffered injuries I spent a month in the hospital in Cam Ranh Bay from injuries plus I have lost a lot of my hearing due to working on jet engines for 3½ yrs.

I get my meds for $5 per prescription.

I served 4yrs active and 2 inactive and have no complaints as I felt an honor to serve my country.

I'm in the Marion IL VA which has been very good BUT the Dr I see is one in a VA Clinic 40 miles north of me has been pretty much a bottom of the list type .

My cousin suffering from agent orange and all the health issues that he has endured and long waits to get approved for his healthcare He fell and really torn up his knee and the VA finally sent him to a specialist that told him in two more weeks there wouldn't have been nothing they could for him.

This is the reason I go to my civilian Dr I only use the VA for blood work and meds maybe at time X-rays .

I'm assuming you've never served nor served in a war zone and I see you have the usual Democrat dislike for the military most men and women served in our military many have been injured in the course of their service many due to our Politicians decisions to put these folks on the front lines .

Most but not all people nowadays appreciate the Vets and since it was the politicians that sent them into war zones to serve and possibly die should be responsible for there healthcare especially those that have lost legs arms eyes and what ever other injuries

In case you didn't know VA healthcare leaves a lot... (show quote)

I served 3 tours in Vietnam.
Don’t ask. Thats all I’m saying about that. It’s mine all mine. I’m not sharing.
I go to VA regularly and understand the frustration. There are plans on the books.
McConnell I’m sure is aware of them.
Including, but not limited to new VA Facilities. Easier access.
Updating for dental access. Many things already approved but needs senate approval.
The republicans are not friends of VA.
