Instead of taking these truly beautiful thurobred horses to slaughter wy not at least try and attempt to give them to ranchers and farmers for free? Actually where is PETA on all of this as well as other organizations that are willing to take them in? I understand that sometimes culling needs to happen for actual conservation reasons like other wild animals. I love horses and they can provide all kinds of uses or for that matter just them run free and let Mother Nature take its course. I also understand that the horses that have been k**led are used for dog food, glue and other uses. But still.

This is nothing new. I would be curious as to where they are being slaughtered though. Texas banned horse slaughter way back.

I'll try to stammer through this, but, I have a lot of horse behind me in my life.
Not sure where to start....its been a few years.

Here's one thing. Once you go through the process, and adopt a wild horse, the work is only beginning. They are WILD ANIMALS, and domesticating them is a long, labor intensive, and time consuming process if done correctly. Dangerous as well. They DO make good horses whether for work, or pleasure. It's just getting them there.
I used to work with a trainer who loved them.
He told me that the only bad habit they had was the desire to escape, and run. They remember everything, and once they learn something, it sticks.
They are very hard to deal with, and need experienced people to do it.
Eh....I could go on and on about it. But I won't now.

I will tell you though, that the only horse I ever made money on I bought because he didn't bring the price at auction, so they were gonna take him to the k**ler plant at Morton for a buck a pound. He was a 1200 pound horse, and I paid 11 hundred for him. Sold him a few months later to a rancher for 18.

Told you I would ramble....I have opinions, but no answers for this.

President’s FY 2020 Budget Asks Congress to Lift Long-Standing Ban on Slaughter and K*****g Healthy Horses

Washington, DC (April 2, 2019) . . . The American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC) today harshly criticized the Trump Administration for again ignoring the will of 80% of Americans by pressing for permission from Congress to k**l tens of thousands of federally-protected wild horses.

The renewed push came in the administration's Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 budget justification, which again asks Congress to lift its long-standing prohibition the destruction of healthy wild horses and burros and the sale of these federally-protected animals for slaughter.

“The Trump Administration continues to defy the will of the American people by proposing the slaughter of our iconic wild horses and burros,” said Suzanne Roy, Executive Director of the American Wild Horse Campaign. “The Administration’s decision to prioritize the mass k*****g of mustangs over humane management alternatives recommended by the National Academy of Sciences is, irresponsible, morally bankrupt, and politically unacceptable.”

The President’s budget justification reads, "that appropriations language restricting B*M from using all of the management options authorized in the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 be eliminated so that the full suite of tools originally authorized by Congress will be available to manage growing wild horse and burro herds."
