Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. has convened a grand jury as his office investigates whether the Trump Organization violated state law, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

The grand jury will meet three days a week for six months and consider evidence not just in the Trump investigation but also in other matters, according to The Post.

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office is conducting a wide-ranging inquiry into the Trump Organization's and former President Donald Trump's finances, court records show. One major point of examination is whether the Trump Organization broke state tax laws by keeping two sets of books — one for favorable tax and loan rates, and the other to pay little in taxes.

Tuesday's development marks an aggressive new phase in Vance's years-long investigation, which legal experts suspect is nearing its end stages.

Earlier this year, Vance's office scored a major victory when the Supreme Court cleared the way for it to obtain eight years of Trump's closely held tax returns. Legal experts also said in March that Vance would likely want to make charging decisions before his retirement at the end of the year.

Previous court filings suggested the investigation was sparked by testimony from Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen that the Trump Organization facilitated a hush-money payment to the adult-film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 US e******n — which could also be a violation of state tax laws. Prosecutors are also scrutinizing senior Trump Organization executives like Allen Weisselberg, the company's longtime chief financial officer.

Earlier this month, Politico reported that officials in Florida, where Trump resides, were putting together "contingency plans" in the event that he faced a criminal indictment from New York.

Vance's investigation and a separate inquiry by the New York attorney general's office both appear to be weighing on Trump's mind. Last week, he released a 909-word statement skewering Vance and the state's attorney general, Tish James, and accusing them of political persecution.

The statement came after a spokesperson from James' office told CNN that her investigation, which started as a civil inquiry, had taken on a criminal component and that the attorney general was working with the Manhattan DA on the matter.

"After prosecutorial efforts the likes of which nobody has ever seen before, they failed to stop me in Washington, so they turned it over to New York to do their dirty work," Trump said in his statement, adding: "If these prosecutors focused on real issues, crime would be obliterated, and New York would be great and free again!"

Cohen, meanwhile, said he believed the former president may ultimately be the one to flip on everyone around him.

"I think Donald Trump is going to flip on all of them, including his children," he told MSNBC's Joy Reid. "I really believe that Donald Trump cares for only himself, and he realizes that his goose is cooked."

How bout we let the grand jury decide, OK?

5th amendment rights - Innocent until proven guilty, fair trial, no double jeopardy, stuff of our judicial system, not a summary pronouncement of guilt without a trial.

Be advised: If this grand jury cannot find sufficient grounds to indict Donald Trump, he cannot face these charges again. Should that happen, and it is entirely possible, are you gonna shut your pie hole and stop obsessing over Trump?

A Crash Course in the American Grand Jury System

It is probably not much of an exaggeration to say that virtually every American is familiar with the concept and function of a trial jury, even if only through watching any of the seemingly endless number of popular legal dramas. Much like a trial jury, a grand jury is a group of individuals (16 to 24) who have been selected and sworn in by a judge to serve a particular purpose in the legal system. In fact, grand jurors are usually chosen from the very same pool of citizens as are trial jurors. When used for purposes of pursuing criminal charges, the grand jury is to be comprised of individuals that represent a cross-section of the population, just as is sought for a trial jury.

While a trial jury will sit for only the duration of a criminal case, a grand jury is impaneled for a much longer period: a federal grand jury can sit for anywhere from 18-36 months, while state grand juries can sit for varying terms ranging from one month to one year. Typically, grand juries do not convene daily. Instead, grand juries often convene only once per week or a few times per month. Nevertheless, depending on the potential duration of the commitment, oftentimes grand jurors are retired people or others whose work or home schedules allow them to spend the time required to serve on a grand jury.

First and foremost, a grand jury proceeding is unique in that it is conducted in complete secrecy. The only people present in the room during a grand jury proceeding are the jurors themselves, a prosecutor, and a court reporter, who is sworn to secrecy. There are no judges, clerks, or other court personnel present. Instead, the grand jury foreperson presides over the hearing, and another grand juror usually serves the roll of court clerk by calling witnesses, keeping track of evidence, and performing other duties. Any witnesses that are called to testify before the grand jury do so one at a time and are not entitled to have anyone else present, including an attorney. The witness may consult with legal counsel, but may only do so outside of the hearing room. The witness is questioned by the prosecutor and, in some jurisdictions, by the grand jurors themselves. However, because the prosecutor is the only attorney present, the witness is not cross-examined. The witness' testimony is given under oath, just as if given during trial.

The threat posed by Trump and reason for wanting him silenced is that he knows where La Kosher Nostra skeletons are buried.

Are you claiming trump is part of your anti Semitic group? He sure tried to cater to them to get support.

I honor and support the Palestinian Semites who have suffered at the hand of the synagogue of Satan who are not Semites.

Your one brain cell has a one-track--increasingly ineffective--retort to label "my group" as anti-Semitic.
