'March for Jesus' planned for Saturday, May 22, beginning at Grand Cities Mall

May 15—The public is invited to participate in the "March for Jesus," which begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at the Grand Cities Mall, organizers say.
Participants plan to gather at 10 a.m. in the parking area in front of Thrive Community Church at the mall.
At 11 a.m., they will walk on the frontage road off Washington Street from 17th to 24th Avenues South and then back to the mall, while singing and carrying banners and signs in praise of Jesus Christ, organizers say.
At about 11:30 a.m., a rally will take place. Participants are asked to bring their own lawn chairs. The praise rally will include worship, fellowship, prayer, salvation opportunity, remarks and food.
The purpose is "to come together in unity as Christians," said Joe Chine, event organizer.
Christians of different church denominations and affiliations are invited to walk, "proclaiming the name of Jesus," singing praise songs and praying for our communities and the nation, Chine said.
"This is not a protest or a political march, but rather a march or walk by Christians to lift up the name of Jesus in love, outside the walls of our local churches," according to a flyer promoting the event.
Organizers hope that Christians of all ages, Protestants and Catholics, from the area will come together with "a focus on the love, joy, and the peace of Jesus Christ," Chine said.
"This national day of praise, prayer and proclaiming the name of Jesus will bring thousands of Christians to the streets of cities around the nation," the flyer reads.
The March for Jesus has been a worldwide event, starting decades ago, Chine said. It reached its height in the 1990s. Some cities have seen turnouts as high as 20,000, he said.
The march was revived in 2020, Chine said. "This is the first year coming out of dormancy."
This is also the first time it's being held in Grand Forks, he added. The march is also expected to take place in Bemidji.
Other local event organizers are Josh Jones, Phil Ehlke and Doris Lebby.
