In many communities emergency medical services are provided by the fire department. Firefighters are almost universally liked and respected and rarely perceived as a threat. It would make sense to give them extended training in approaching and treating mental health emergencies and sending them when appropriate to de escalate situations when possible. An interesting statistic for those who do not believe in white privilege or racial profiling by the police. Did you know that in instances of interaction with unarmed subjects who are not attacking the police black men are shot by the police three times more often than white men.

Social Workers are not the same as Fire Fighters!....I hope they will give Social Workers guns and teach them how to shoot . ... I also hope Social Workers have good funeral packages . ....

In ANY case where a suspect is unarmed and not attacking the police, or endangering someone else, why in the world would they be shot, regardless of color of their skin? I strongly question your statistics. Please provide some validating links when you have the time.

That is every bit as intelligent as the clown who suggested using city street workers to issue speeding tickets. Any police officer will tell you that stopping motorists and issuing tickets is among the most dangerous duties an officer performs. My son-in-law says only domestic disputes are worse.

They should be sent WITH police, not instead of - mentally ill folks are unpredictable and can be violent. Besides, how do they know it's a mental health emergency before they get there?
