Ken Burns: People are making lots of money off ‘the big lie’ of US e******n f***d

Max Zahn with Andy Serwer; Wed, March 31, 2021

Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, known for expansive movies on quintessential American subjects like "Jazz" and "Baseball," said in a new interview that former President Donald Trump and his allies have damaged the country by promoting the "big lie" of widespread e******n f***d — and worse yet, they've made money off of it.

Burns said the media environment allows people to make significant amounts of money off of false public comments, and he contrasted such misinformation with his accurate and complex stories about major events and themes of American history.

"There are a lot of people out there making lots of money on [lies], and it's being exploited — and the big lie is part of the combination of that," says Burns, whose new three-part film "Hemingway" premieres on April 5.

"If you look at the big lie, the ex-president's team raised something like $250 million between the e******n and the inauguration to just support something that is just factually not true," he adds.

'You can't say we're in a post-fact place'

He cited the defense made by former Trump attorney Sidney Powell in a court filing last week that "no reasonable person" could believe her false statements about the supposed role of D******n V****g Systems in e******n f***d. D******n is suing Powell, ex-Trump lawyer and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Fox News for defamation over assertions that the v****g machine company r****d the e******n for President Joe Biden.

"You can't say we're in a post-fact place. It is in the financial interests of a lot of people to promote that," Burns says. "You can't do it. You have to continue to tell the t***h."

Just last week, Trump defended the r****rs who attacked the Capitol on J*** 6, saying they comprised "zero threat" and that law enforcement was "persecuting" them. The remarks align with false claims about v***r f***d repeated by Trump over the months since he lost the November e******n, including a public address late last month at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando where he said the v**e was "r****d."

Trump and the Republican Party raised about $255 million over an eight-plus week period following the Nov. 3 e******n, a New York Times report found. Moreover, the individuals charged in the Capitol r**t upped their political donations by 75% over the five-week period following the e******n, compared with the five-week period preceding it, NBC News reported.

A U.S. intelligence report released earlier this month said the false e******n f***d claims spread by Trump will "almost certainly" fuel further acts of domestic terrorism this year.

Burns spoke to Yahoo Finance Editor-in-Chief Andy Serwer in an episode of “Influencers with Andy Serwer,” a weekly interview series with leaders in business, politics, and entertainment.

A two-time Oscar nominee, Burns has made made films for four decades on a range of topics that span "The Vietnam War" and "The Civil War" to "Country Music" and "Brooklyn Bridge." In addition to the upcoming film "Hemingway," Burns will release later this year "Muhammad Ali," a four-part documentary on the legendary boxer and social activist.

For years, he has lived and worked in the small town of Walpole, New Hampshire.

Speaking to Yahoo Finance, Burns said he makes his films for a wide audience and intentionally leaves out his political preferences.

"I am in the business of trying to tell stories," he says. "I hope they're good. And I speak to everyone. I do not put my politics on display in my films."

"I've got yard signs when the e******ns are coming," he adds. "People in my little town know how I feel."

Outside of having been interviewed, Ken Burns has nothing to do with Yahoo. And, if he were to have been misquoted, Yahoo would be in serious trouble.

Some Trump v**ers believe no court has ever examined evidence of 2020 v**e f***d and all the cases were dismissed on procedural grounds. Yes, this is absolutely true. In most cases the specific procedure was that caused them to fail was they were missing a little known procedural technicality called actual evidence. To bring things to court you're expected to have some of this evidence stuff. Even worse, apparently you can't substitute nonsensical gibberish for evidence. This minor issue appears to have sunk pretty much all the cases. So unfair!

Trump spent the entire campaign discouraging his v**ers from mail-in b****ts by alleging fraud because he knew democrats would overwhelmingly use mail-in b****ts simply because it's the party that took c****-** seriously. So on e******n day, most republicans v**ed in person. Those v**es are tabulated immediately. Republican legislature in those states did not allow mail-in b****ts to be counted before polls closed on e******n day. Since mail b****ts have to be counted by hand with reps from both parties present, this takes a long time. These are not “special” b****ts. They didn't have trouble counting them, they just weren't allowed to start until after e******n unlike most other states.

The entire thing is made for the “appearance of impropriety.” So that in event Trump loses, he can cry foul. It's also why, even while he was leading on e******n night, he claimed victory with so few v**es counted and alleged that there will be fraud. The plot was so t***sparent and obvious, but it pains me to see just how many people bought it. I always knew a portion of his supporters will believe wh**ever he says, just never thought that number would be so large

Department of Homeland Security, on November 12th, issued a statement that said this was the most secure e******n in American history. Investigations that looked into the e******n process found no wrong-doing or any kind of massive systemic fraud that was and still is alleged by Trump.
