Again, the sappy thoughts and prayers from Republicans. When army style assault rifles were banned here, thare wasn't the carnage we have seen in the past 2 weeks.
Peg, let's talk about knives for a second. Decades ago the brilliant politicians passed laws banning switch blade knives, butterfly knives, double edged knives, and knives over a certain length. Plus a few others. The reasoning was that these tools/weapons only purpose was to cause injury, so if we ban them people will not stab each other. Brilliant theory, right?
Do you happen to know what style of knife is used in the vast majority of criminal and domestic stabbings? And I mean every single year going back to when records were first kept, and sweeping forward till today?
The steak knife.
Banning those so called "dangerous" blades did NOTHING to halt stabbings. It was a political stunt.
The problem with mass murder and firearms, as has been stated here already, is mental illness, aided and abetted by our culture that propagates selfishness, self gratification, and that there is no life after death with rewards or punishment.
If a wanna-be k**ler can not buy a rifle, he will buy or steal handguns. Three handguns can easily be concealed and together can carry from 27 to 45 or more bullets, depending on the weapon. If he can not get handguns, he will load a truck with explosives and use that. Failing that, a car or truck on a busy sidewalk is effective. There are other very simple ways to accomplish such an evil goal that I will not address.
The problem is MENTAL ILLNESS and culture.
Criminals and the mentally ill do NOT care about or follow laws.
Banning rifles, of any type, or handguns, or magazines of a large capacity, is more l*****t tripe intended to achieve hidden and unadmitted goals, and WILL not and CAN not do a thing to stop or limit firearms used for murder, mass or otherwise.
All it will do is put honest citizens and their families in constant danger with no recourse but to run and hide. That did not work so well for those massage parlor employees or the shoppers in the store, now did it?
Here in Texas, there would have been enough folks with concealed weapons that the number of deaths would most likely have been much less. And one of them would have been the villain. In 2017 there was a mass shooting in a little Texas town names Sutherland Springs. 26 people died. No one had a concealed weapon to stop him with. He fled, and someone ran to their vehicle, grabbed a firearm, and shot and k**led him.
Two years later, in 2019, someone tried the same thing in Fort Worth. But multiple church members had concealed carry weapons. The result was two people died before the murderer was put down by an armed church member.
The problem is mental illness. Until that can be universally diagnosed and treated successfully, the only solution is good citizens legally armed. You would stop that.
