Dershowitz is a “victim” of his own hubris. Several years ago he chose to abandon his credibility for notoriety trading his reputation for celebrity. When he did so he lost something he didn’t plan on, his acceptance in polite society; and it truly hurts him. Where he was once a part of exclusive society now they reject and ridicule him for his vulgar dishonesty. What his cult doesn’t realize is that a drive for membership in this club is what drove Donald Trump to run for president. And what he failed to recognize is that buying a golden toilet, private jet decorated for a pimp, east block trophy brides or buildings with his name emblazoned on the side or even the presidency for that matter would ever gain him acceptance to this club. Dershowitz Had a seat at the table that he threw away. And now like Trump he is ridiculed by those people, and now is welcome only in the company of lucky hucksters like the my pillow guy or brash Texan oil men who chomp on thirty dollar cigars swollen bellies h*****g over diamond crusted belt buckles. Men who wrongly believe class and stature are commodities that can be bought.
What Dershowitz coins as “cancel culture” is just a fundamental function of capitalism playing itself out. Companies must adapt with the times to make money on a perpetual track of constant and infinite profit. This is why businesses engage in practices like greenwashing – packaging their goods and services in superficially environmentally friendly ways, while doing little to change their real environmental impact – and pinkwashing, the annual tradition of turning products pink for breast cancer awareness, even for products that may cause cancer themselves. These corporations don’t have morals, and don’t care about taking political or ethical stances; their bottom line is just that – their bottom line. This is how an oil company like Chevron can pat itself on the back for investing $100m in lowering emissions while simultaneously investing $20bn in oil and gas, or how Baker Hughes, one of the world’s largest oilfield operators, can proudly distribute 1,000 pink drill bits across the planet, while using known and possible carcinogens at their hydraulic fracking facilities. People like Dershowitz aren’t canceled they are simply rejected and laughed at by polite society, as a result of their own behavior, and it stings.
