I rode dirt bikes as a kid. They were loads of fun. Then I discovered horses, and never looked back.

I thought so!! If you haven't ever felt the power, and strength of a horse underneath you, when you are both working together...well, you have missed a great experience!!

I thought I was quite the man with a bike at one time. I never would have thought a horse could beat one. With the bike, it is all in the sk**l of the rider. With the horse, it is the sk**l of both horse, and rider.

I have to say, one of the most beautiful things on earth is watching a horse run

You best pay attention to what your horse is telling you. I know this, because I received a blue ribbon for taking a jump beautifully...by myself. The horse did not see fit to participate. :( :XD: :D

That sort of sound like an experience I had one time. I was trail riding with a few friends and we were going single file over this little creek. Now that was about a 1 foot drop off into the creek and all the horses in front of me just jumped over. It was not really very wide, so it was a very easy jump for the horses. Well, mine came to that darn creek and put his front feet down into the creek, so I leaned back a little. I thought he was going to walk across that darn creek, but he had other ideas. As soon as I leaned back, he jumped and I did a very nice back flip right over that horses rump and landed flat on my back in the middle of that creek. Water was about 6 inches deep where I landed. He got to the other side and stopped, turned his head around and to this day I swear he was laughing at me. I did ride him back, but I went back to motorcycles after that. I wanted something under me that did not have a mind of it's own.

Well, my one and only jump wasn't done with my consent, and if I hadn't been so terrified, I probably would have noticed things like the grace of that horse. However, at that point in time, immediately before I saw my life go right before my eyes, I was thinking that riding lessons might have been a good idea, BEFORE getting on...but as in a lot of things in this life...TOO late!!

Doesn't it hurt the horse to ride a dirt bike on it?

I have some cousins with a big cattle ranch. I learned how to ride on an old horse named Sam. One of my cousins is named after the horse. As I got older I got involved in roundups and I learned what the the big floppy hat and the pointy toed boots were for. I have been in brush you could not see thru and if the horse saw a cow you better hang on. We would take 3 horses each with us for a days work. We use Hackmores instead of bits. One horse that I always rode was Ringo. Smarter than me by a long shot. He once slipped out of his Hackmore while I was leading him across a rock patch and I did not know it. I walked a good distance d**gging the reins.

On the mornings I can't ride to the top of the mountain, I am depressed most of the day. My Grandfather taught me to ride. I never feel as free as I do riding my horse.

The grand kids love the morning rides. It just starts the day off right.

I bet it does!! Such awesome quality time. My grampa lived on top of a high ridge in KY, and while I didn't ride, just sitting out on the swing on the front porch at the beginning of the day was a treat for me, a child living in the suburbs of D.C.
