You Have 'Near Zero' Impact on US Policy Decisions

In reading the Drudge Report this morning, I found an article the made me swallow very hard. According to the article, a study conducted and authored by Princeton University Professor Martin Gilens and Northwestern University Professor Benjamin Page concluded that corporate interests and mega wealthy individuals control U.S. policy to such a degree that "the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy."

The study titled " Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens") was highlighted in a Tuesday article published in The Hill, calls Gilens and Page's research "shattering" and says their scholarship "should be a loud wake-up call to the vast majority of Americans who are bypassed by their government."

Many of us have long suspected that our Government seldom listens to the v****g public, and this article confirms as much. Major structural changes MUST be made to gain the attention of the elected political class. What say you?

Those with "clout" such as the wealthy and powerful individuals and corporations will continue to make the rules for the rest of us to follow.

Very doubtful that anything will change.

This is an issue, many of us here, have been harping on for years. This is no new aberration, it has been going on for 200 years, or more. Recently, with the "corporations are people too" and "unlimited money in politics", the USSC has simply allowed them to come out of the shadows. Most Americans have no clue about how many billions of dollars flow to and through DC, just to affect legislation.

Lobbying and campaign contributing are only the tip of this corrupt ice burg. Promises of lucrative employment after retirement, has LONG been used to influence senior DoD employees, when defense contracts are due. Promising to use family member businesses, is another way to influence sitting elected officials, as well as promises to use businesses in his/her district.

We constantly here from politicians touting what the American people desire, but they never explain how they know that. It is a polite fiction that we have swallowed, for so many years, that it has become habit. Try meeting with your Congressperson, or Senator and see how far you get. Unless you have a big check in hand, or represent a significant v****g block, you'll get nowhere. Represent the people my ass.
