What are we to make of humanity of almost every stripe willing to sacrifice for a stranger, even at the risk of their lives?

The stories are countless. Christians and every religion and people indifferent to faith have acted the same. Why? It goes against basic survival, supposedly our most compelling drive. What motives are in the heart to do such things? I guess that question is the crux.

Many will try to tailor-fit it to some belief system. But I think that underestimates who we are in essence. Of course there can be hidden motives. A guy falls on a grenade to be accepted by his platoon. A man jumps into a raging river to prove his bravado. Yet that may not be the whole story. I believe their is an interconnection. We are not wholly autonomous beings. As in, "no man is an island unto himself." We act because that other is us: our basic nature to relate. Which god did this? We will never know.
