What empire? You were part of the British Empire for a long, long time. You could have grown some cajones and booted the Red Coats out like we did twice, or the Mexicans under Santa Ana like we did in Texas. We were even an independent nation for nearly 10 years. The only decent movie about Australia has an American hero with a big ol’ Sharps 50.
Status Quo has always moved on, for example the Mogul Empire wasn't the same as the Roman Empire one was long, one was short, empires often reflect opposites.
So the British Empire didn't fold in Australia as you say, Gough Whitlam nearly gave it the flick and with his dying breath Gough said to me telepathically, I did my best I hope you can do better as Jesus Christ, see you in Paradise.
We haven't given up we're just waiting for the appropriate opposite to present itself, the Mongols were cruel and the Romans were more benevolent maybe thats why they lasted longer, or it could have been the Roman concept of property ownership, but both were empires because the word empire is Latin coming from emperor, so if the Mongols had of been more kind the US would be Khan and you'd be saying can the can because they wouldn't have lost so easily.
However both British and Republican Economic Empires have property divided out based on birth right, opposites have joined forces Ned Kelly tried to prevent that and offered the Diggers a way out but, had that of been successful Australia would be a lot of different Nations constantly at each other's throat, true the Monarchy would not exist here but then I wouldn't want to be fighting with other Australians for the sake of Ideology.
Sorry to ramble on, you shouldn't have mentioned Ned, here's some recorded pronouncements of the Gold Miners that came after his execution.
" Farewell to my home in Greta, my loved ones, fare thee well,
It grieves my heart to leave you. But here I cannot dwell.
This one is from the Stringybark encounter.-
"But brave Kelly muttered sadly as he loaded up his gun.
Oh, what a bloody pity the bastard tried to run".
The Bould Sojer Boy. - (Sojer is colloquial for soldier I think.)
"Oh, there's not a dodge worth knowing,
Or showing, that's going.
But you'll hear (this isn't blowing),
From the bold Kelly Gang".
A heroic one. -
"High above the mountains
So beautiful and grand,
Four young Australian heroes
In bold defence stand.
In bold defence stand, my boys,
The heroes of today,
So let us join together, boys.
And shout again Hooray !.
