The American Civil Liberties Union has faced criticism for many years for advocating some pretty wild left-wing positions, but calling for the abolishment of the Department of Homeland Security is probably the craziest yet.
Anthony D. Romero, the executive director of the ACLU, called for the total abolishment of the DHS citing conspiracy theories about paramilitary and anonymous abductions of peaceful protesters. It’s the same line pushed by far-left Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and one that was thoroughly and totally proven wrong when DHS representatives showed journalists examples of the uniforms worn by federal agents when making arrests.
Those uniforms are emblazoned with the word “POLICE” and all have unique ID badges that identify the officers.
Despite this, Romero wrote in USA Today over the weekend that the DHS is a “paramilitary” that was sent into Portland, and that the organization threatens “freedoms and our security.”
Not only is his argument based on a false premise, but the Department of Homeland Security was also established in the wake of the September 11 attacks in 2001. It is an agency designed to protect the American people against terrorism and violent extremists, and Portland is currently under siege from violent left-wing extremists who have thrown explosives at federal buildings and blinded police officers with strong lasers.
“People across the political spectrum watched in disbelief as federal agents were deployed to American cities – despite objections by mayors and governors – to escalate violence against protesters,” Romero said, without providing any evidence whatsoever that people “across the political spectrum” were unhappy with the decision to send in federal agents to stop violent extremists and r****rs.
“Paramilitary forces abducted people exercising their constitutional rights in Portland, placed them in unmarked vehicles and took them to undisclosed locations,” he said about federal officers arresting people who had committed violent crimes.
Since when is committing violent crimes a “constitutional right”?
Sending in federal agents to areas experiencing surges in violent crime and r**ts is entirely normal, but Democrats and left-wing activists have condemned the president for taking the action for seemingly political purposes. Without federal agents, the crime would be significantly worse.
Mark Morgan, the acting COO and Commissioner of Customers and Border Protection told Breitbart that sending in federal officers to protect federal property is “common practice.”
“I’ve participated in multiple federal law enforcement surges over the years,” he said. “This is common practice when we see an increase of violent crime.”
