It’s propaganda.

China didn’t intentionally create the v***s, but they’re using it as a propaganda tool. This is an important year for China as they approach the 100th year of the party.

It’s very important to give their citizens, the impression that they are “winning”.

Grain of salt time.

China has great propaganda... But in recent months they've been slipping... Too much emphasus on openly knocking the US and other antagonistic nations.... The quality has fallen noticeably....

Hmm walking down memory lane. The government had an issue. That issue’s name was Abe. Not American Abe, but Abe-sama.

The Japanese school in Beijing was assailed by a mob. It was orchestrated as a way for (some of) the people to take out their frustration, and to intimidate the Japanese in the process. Two objectives — accomplished.

Wasn't that back in 2011 when they were squabbling over that island like a couple of toddlers?

That was ridiculous.... Lots of h**e crimes then... The first week our Japanese teachers were nervous... But happy to say not a single incident on our campus....

Although it was probably best they couldn't read Chinese (I hope)... A real estate company made a bunch of bumper stickers calling Japanese dogs and handed them out to taxi drivers with a free car wash... Awesome advertising strategy... But rather despicable....

You got it. Balance enflaming emotions, with providing windows through which to diffuse it, to best benefit.

Yep...

Remember when they (Japan and China) were discussing joint development of the island and its resources?

That would have been awesome...

Beijing. Mandarins in Beijing, as opposed to the Cantonese, who have been more open minded to foreign interactions.

Canton has had a longer history of interactions with the outside world... Beijing is of course the seat of government... What would you expect

Indeed. Thus issues like the struggles between Shanghai and Guangdong (modern, business) and Beijing (old guard)
