You people?

I had nothing to do with Rhode Island's decision. Their state, their issue, their right to address as they see fit. I just pointed out that Rhode Islanders might have a reason for dealing with a name change.

Same with Washington state....not my issue. We have enough to deal with in NC.

From Wikipedia:

The term "plantation" was used in the 17th century as a synonym for "settlement" or "colony." The Providence Plantation was a settlement established in 1636.

Following the 1660 restoration of royal rule in England, it was necessary to gain a Royal Charter from King Charles II. Charles was a Catholic sympathizer in staunchly Protestant England, and he approved of the colony's promise of religious freedom. He granted the request with the Royal Charter of 1663, uniting the four settlements together into the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. In the following years, many persecuted groups settled in the colony, notably Quakers and Jews.[6][7] The Rhode Island colony was very progressive for the time, passing laws abolishing witchcraft trials, imprisonment for debt, most capital punishment, and s***ery of both b****s and w****s,[8][9] enacting the first law prohibiting s***ery in America on May 18, 1652, more than 210 years before the Emancipation Proclamation.[10]

I doubt they were s***eholders very long.

I had no quibble with your original post. My first response was to the 'liberals are stupid' .
It is up to Rhode Islanders to decide on their name, not me.

I agree that it's up to them if they want to rename their state. My point was that if it's because of the "plantation" in the long version of the name, they are barking up the wrong tree. The term wasn't used for the s***e labor farms there, at the time it was named. And they should take note of their history of how their forefathers dealt with forced servitude, and embrace it instead of joining the new "me too" movement that's wanting to erase history so they can relive it at a later date.

And I just pointed out the stupidity of taking a benign word and associating it with s***ery- which ended over 150 years ago.

So there are times when you're for state's rights and times when you're against them???

I agree that in a democracy, people have the right to change what they wish.... But I question the narrative being pushed...

Well yeah. Depends on the case, right? A state doesn't have the right to take away your gun but it does have a right to change it's name, assuming all the protocols are followed. I have often pointed out that where we stand depends upon where we sit. When Trump is in the White House Republicans don't think California has the right to enforce it's own air pollution laws but Democrats do. When Obama is in the White House, Republicans think states should be able to opt out of a national health care plan and Democrats don't. And vice versa.

Same is true with federal deficits: depending on the party in power they are either necessary economic policies or the downfall of the union and betrayal of the future. Both parties hold both positions, depending on which party sits in the big chair.

There are no absolutes in political theater.

And isn't it possible that the narrative being 'pushed' is actually a narrative who's time has come? I don't remember any national conversation about the name of Rhode Island....I didn't even know about it until this particular conversation. Seems that Rhode Islanders came up with this idea by themselves.

Hope you are well CD.
