The Mystery of Adams Name

Who doesn’t know the story of Adam, the first man, created by God from the dust? The story of Adam’s expulsion from Eden sets the stage for the entire Bible. It is the source of sin, humanity’s departure from God’s will. But it is also the story that points towards the future redemption of the whole world. In Hebrew, the name “Adam” reveals the secret of great things that lie ahead…

The Genealogy of the Messiah
Adam is the first man mentioned in the Bible and it is therefore fitting that his name simply means “man” in Hebrew (אדם). However, hiding within this humble name are three very symbolic letters: A-D-M. Think about Adam’s name as an acronym summarizing the story of humanity, lining up perfectly with the genealogy of Jesus found at the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew. Who do these letters refer to?

Three Letters, Three Heroes of Faith
The first letter is aleph א and stands for “Abraham,” the founder of the Jewish people and the first man to worship the one true God. The second letter is dalet ד and stands for “David,” the greatest king of Israel and the direct ancestor of the future Messiah. The third letter is mem מ and stands for “Mashiach,” the anointed messianic savior king who will deliver humanity at the End of Days.

Understand The Last AdamThe letters of Adam’s name explain what the Apostle Paul meant when he wrote, “the first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit” (1 Cor. 15:45). You might have known that this “last Adam” is Jesus, but without Biblical Hebrew you might not have understood why. Hebrew reveals why things mean what they do. Enroll today in our live online Biblical Hebrew courses and transform your sense of Scripture!
