A democracy is the opposite of a republic. Democracy makes a republic impossible. To put it as simply as I can, a republic is rule by law; a democracy is rule by majority. In a republic, law is the final arbiter. In a democracy, law exists only so long as the majority v**es for it. Republics are stable; democracies are unstable.

In our country, the Constitution guarantees rule by the majority, but with respect for the rights of the minority. A modern democracy as you suggest doesn't make sense. It is we the people who elect our representatives in state houses, town halls and Congress. We also elect the head of the executive branch. State judges, and local judges are often elected by the v**ers as well. With all that e******n' going on, I would call this nation a democracy and a republic, by your definition.

You might have a point if you had called us an oligarchy but you're dead wrong calling us a democracy.

We have no control over those we elect. We cede 100% of our authority to govern, to those we elect. Our only recourse to their decisions is to refuse them another term in office or in some cases, to urge their impeachment. I say 'urge' because we, as citizens, have no authority to govern. If the legislature passes a law, it stands until another legislature changes it. The will of the people is utterly impotent, except as determined by law.

Additionally, we DO NOT elect the President. The e*******l college elects the President and those e*****rs are appointed by the states, not through e******n by the people.

The law as it stands is the ruling authority, not the people.

In a democracy, the law only stands as long as a majority enforces it... or the law falls immediately and anyone representing us can be summarily removed following a majority v**e to do so. This is not how our government functions.
