John Glenn served 24 years in the US Senate, and in 1998, at age 77, he joined the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery as a payload specialist. Teamed with younger astronauts, he spent 9 days in orbit conducting physiological research into the effects of zero gravity on the aged. Glenn passed away in December, 2016.
