Yep... That's a valid point...
How do you explain your fellow Americans?

They're lost.
To paraphrase Ben Franklin, anyone who is willing to give up their liberty for security deserves neither.

Nothing like a little deflection canuckus.

Lol... It's called perspective...

On what? If you have no knowledge of s***ery in the 1700s, how can you put any perspective on Washington?
At the end of the Revolutionary War, he grew quite uncomfortable with the s***eholding traditions of the time and so in his will he asked that his s***es be freed upon the death of his wife, Martha.
Your constant digs at our American heritage and our way of life are troublesome.

It's not a dig... It's a fact...
He wrote about liberty and freedom while embracing s***ery... Spin that how now???
And we're discussing Franklin... Didn't he have a couple children with one of his s***es... Hope he freed them...

A lot of us don't think we are giving up either. We (the many), are just going through a short term change of social behavior for the country (The One). As things get under control those behavioral changes can revert back to normal. I don't fault Trump at all for trying to institute social distancing, and nobody is trying to take my guns away.
Our original motto of "E pluribus unum", meaning "out of many, one", was the countries motto from our origin in 1776 up until 1956 when it was changed to "In God We Trust". I think both are still important for us today.

Apparently you have no knowledge of the s***e culture in colonial America. Before the Declaration and the War of Independence, the colonies were under British rule. Twas the British who introduced the s***e trade to the "new world" nearly four centuries ago - long before the founding of our nation. Most, if not all, of our founders inherited their s***es from their fathers and grandfathers.
Benjamin Franklin owned 6 s***es - a family. At that time, most citizens, including Ben, believed that b****s were an inferior race that could not be educated. Franklin had a major change of heart when his friend Samuel Johnson brought him to one of Dr. Bray’s schools for black children. There the children convinced him otherwise, he saw no difference in learning between African and white children. In 1787 Franklin became the President of the Philadelphia Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage, often referred as the Abolition Society.
Nearly 700,000 Americans lost their lives in a war that settled the issue. My question is, where are you going with this? What are you driving at? Why must we explain our fellow Americans to you? Do you have a bone to pick with Americans? If so, let's have it.

Apparently you have no knowledge of the s***e cult... (
show quote)
No bone to pick... Why would I?
America has had triumphs and failures much like other nations...
Yes... America inherited s***ery from the British... But the British abolished it before America... And as you point out it required a rather bloody war between brothers to bring it about in America...
Why does this history embarrass you? (I'm making an assumption here)
The founding fathers were great men, but hardly flawless...
And Parky's assertion that Ben Franklin would resist social safeguards in the name of liberty is absurd....
My line of reasoning was intended to highlight that point, not disparage your Nation...
Apologies for any lack of clarity in my writing...
