Rand Paul: I Think I Was Misunderestimated'

Rand Paul On Drones: Well, in The Famous Words Of George W. Bush, I Think I Was Misunderestimated'

HANNITY: Yes.

PAUL: If you watch my debate for 13 hours, which I don't think many people did, I used the exact same example of the liquor store in my 13-hour debate. I said over and over again, for example, I also used the hypothetical, if the Twin Towers are being attacked, that's deadly force being used against America and Americans, there is the right to defend ourselves with deadly force. If someone is engaged --

HANNITY: Yes. But what does that mean, though? Does that mean that in the middle of this that the police could have called up a drone strike -- you're saying we should have drones in major cities available if such an incident like this occurs?

PAUL: No. I think people misinterpret what we're talking about here. If there is an active gun fight going on and you were shooting at the police and you're robbing a liquor store, the police have the ability and they have the justified obligation to fire back. The type of technology doesn't really matter.

For example, if we were opposed to technology, we might be opposed to a drone or a robot that might dismantle a bomb. A drone is a type of technology. I've been against the abuse of the Bill of Rights, but never said I was against any kind of technology.

But do I want drones flying over getting involved in normal crime sequences? No. But I could imagine a time where a policeman is being shot at in his car and they have the ability to push a button in the car and a small robotic weapon is able to elevate and shoot back at a criminal. So what you call a drone doesn't have to be from 50,000 feet. It could be simply in the neighborhood and part of a car.

I am not sure I can agree with your NO WAY. I say that because of an editorial in my morning paper that although pretty humorous makes a lot of sense to people from Kansas. It seems that PETA wants to buy drones to spy on h****rs and large farmers to keep them from k*****g animals. Now h****rs in Kansas pay for licenses, (revenue for the state) and expect to be able to shoot deer legally but then PETA is against the k*****g of animals. Out here in the sticks we suffer a lot from the deer population being too large. They cost us a lot of money so many of us just want them k**led.

If PETA can find a workable, affordable drone to spy on h****rs with what would keep the state from selling licenses to h****rs who want to shoot the damnable things down?

I am in favor of letting PETA fly many of them over Kansas under what the writer of that editorial piece says. Bring 'em on.

Excuse me for straying from the topic.

I live next to a state forest, so there are deer everywhere. They jump the fence around the yard at night when I plant vegetables. They love fresh greens, lettuce, etc.

They are a menace at night. I've had two incidents with them in past years, once at dusk that damaged the car, the other time in Indianapolis on the bypass, again at dusk, I was sideswiped. I could never intentionally harm them though.

I talked with my h****r son about hunting those things and he agreed that we could raise a lot of revenue selling licenses to hunt PETA drones. We don't like anything that could cut back on the numbers of deer k**led around here. If you farmed and counted as many as 250 or them grazing on your wheat maybe you would feel the same about them. We just think that the season for deer should be maybe 364 days per year.

Your experiences would keep me mad at those things. I had a friend who raised some great gardens and then the deer moved in and his fences kept getting higher and they kept on jumping over them.

OldRoy, I don't really get mad anymore,- must be jaded. Righteous indignation about covers it, and that's toward idiocy, not varmints. In the yard, resorted to container gardening, and raised square plant beds, trying to confuse them. ;-)

I've driven through the entire state of Kansas, years ago, returning from Seattle... Round trip, Longest drive I ever undertook. I remember the wheat fields driving through Oregon and Washington, don't remember them in Kansas.

I'll post on Rand Paul's last act of "independence" briefly.

What part of the year did you make that trip in? Maybe, depending on the time of year, you failed to recognize the wheat fields of Kansas because of their size which would be pretty big by most people's standards.

OldRoy, I asked my son this morning if he remembered seeing wheat when we drove through Kansas on that trip. He said, "Yeah, nothing but wheat for three hundred miles."

It was in August, 1975, a few months after the movie, "Jaws," was released. When we drove out Puget Sound to the ocean beach, no one was willing to wade in past their ankle.

At that time all the wheat was stubble since it had been cut between mid-June and mid-July. Actually there would have been nearer 400 miles of that stuff. By that time of year many of the farmers had disced up their stubble and were ready to replant from late August to mid-October.

I always worried about ocean water but never saw anything like a shark in any of it I ever got into. We went to the beach in northern Italy all the time but I don't know if there are sharks in the Adriatic.

OldRoy, I guess there was a reason I didn't see the wheat, if it was stubble. I drove the entire trip.
We came back at the very end of August, visiting my sister in Sattle after 2 1/2 weeks . Going out, went north to Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota, then Yellowstone in Wyoming then Seattle. Trip back, Salt Lake City to hear Mormon Tabernacle Choir practice, then Arizona -Grand Canyon, came north into Kansas below Wichita, missed right turn to Kansas City, and wasted over an hour, before I turned, so 300 miles should have been 220, my son was reminding me, he must have seen the stubble.

Wow, am I glad I was there in 1956 and 1957. That was much more than that 40 years ago. Honestly, we never did see anything that resembled sharks. Once when pushing a paddle boat from underneath a couple of us did come up against a human turd, but it didn't have teeth.
