In High school I wonder why they pushed college on us so hard instead of trades?🤔

They didn't tell me union plumbers can make $1,600 a week with NO OT and NO DEGREE.. or that truck drivers can make 6 bands if they buy their own truck with NO Degree? Or that traveling welders can make 100,000 a year with NO Degree.🤔

For some reason they made it seem like college was the only way to be successful. I swear... it's as if the guidance counselors training was to redirect our thinking and to fixate our minds and success in life based off the results we get from the college we choose. Notice they never mentioned us starting a business or even taught us how to in school? They always made sure they pushed the collegiate agenda and never even mentioned an outside option like trade school.

Our school system is not designed to make bosses. It's designed to make s***es. Otherwise they would train us to be self employed and self sufficient. They do not. Teach your children that they are more than just a piece of paper. Their minds can expand pass the average status quo and that they have sk**ls that can not be put on paper. There are great engineers right now managing a restaurant because they listened to their guidance counselor instead of their heart.

There are so many trades looking for sk**led technicians that pay big bucks. Parents and their children need to consider the alternatives to getting a very expensive college degree versus pursuing trade school. I agree with your post 100%

Permafrost, you did good. I agree that schools do not teach much that is useful after graduating.

I know exactly where the author is coming from. A number of friends with whom I grew up went to college, got degrees, then instead of going into the fields for which they'd been educated went into trades instead -- carpentry, plumbing, etc -- and enjoyed comfortable lives, raised great families and did so without suffering strokes, heart attacks or the labyrinthine assininity of office politics.

My personal theory is that schools were mostly small community based and rural until about WWII. After WWII schools were consolidated and became more institutionalized. Teachers and Administrators were admired and considered successful. A student who became a teacher was considered successful. Success was measured in level of academic education and going to college was a ticket to success. As the country grew from rural to urban, the cultural changed and vocational trades became much more sophisticated and lucrative.
Administrators and school boards did not recognize that education was not changing with the times and and that the school curriculum did not meet the needs of students. I believe this is still true with most communities.

Permi? Helloooo Permi!! Are you alright? I'm a little concerned about you right about now.

I spent 2 grand to send my son to trade school for working on wind turbines. He turned that into a 100 + thousand dollar a year living.

It is all really simple to me. Is your sociologist gonna fix your pipes when your s**t won't drain??

IMHO public schools have become one of the most dangerous places for young people K through college. Schools no longer teach students how to think but rather they teach them what to think.

I agree with the post schools should bring back subjects such as shop, metalworking, and Home economics. and lead students to consider other options besides college.

Hey, Perm. I have a cousin in Montana who got a MASTERS in psychology. He ended up taking over our grandfather's business cementing wells and made a lot of money. The family joke is that they were very well adjusted wells.
