The Biblical Origins of Netanyahu
Get to the heart of Israel with Hebrew
What does Netanyahu Actually Mean?

Mr. Netanyahu’s last name (נתניהו) is actually a compound name. Netan (נתן) means “he gave” and Yahu (יהו) is a shortened version of YHWH, the covenant name of the Lord of Israel. So, the translation of the current prime minister’s last name is “the Lord has given.” Incidentally, if you switch these two halves around, you get another very famous Biblical name: Yeho + Natan or “Jonathan”. Mr. Netanyahu’s first name, Benjamin, is of course also the name of a well-known figure in the Bible, one of Jacob’s twelve sons.

The State of Israel is saturated with biblical imagery; national symbols, national festivals, and personal names. As both his first and last names demonstrate, Benjamin Netanyahu is a true emblem of the biblically rooted Jewish State of Israel. The best way to get to the heart of what Israel really means is to learn to read the Bible in the authentic language of the people of Israel: Hebrew. Enroll in our live online course today.

Your timing is perfect for this info, bahmer,

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has just succeeded in winning 60 seats for his bloc of right-wing and religious parties in today’s election. It will be his 5th term as Prime Minister of Israel.

He was born 21 October 1949, an Israeli politician who has been Prime Minister of Israel since 2009, having previously held the position from 1996 to 1999. Netanyahu is also the Chairman of the Likud – National Liberal Movement. He is the longest-serving Prime Minister in Israeli history and the first to be born in Israel after the establishment of the state.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Netanyahu, Bibi Netanyaho's older brother was the famous Israeli hero who was Commander of the Entebbe Rescue Force after a 4th July, 1976, Air France flight was hijacked, and 103 passengers, many of them Israeli citizens, were flown to Entebbe, Uganda as hostages. He was shot and killed during their otherwise successful rescue.
