Education Dept. to Cut Off Federal Funding for Some Rural Schools
A bookkeeping change at the department will cut thousands of dollars in aid to some of the poorest, most isolated schools in the country.

Feb. 28, 2020

WASHINGTON — A bookkeeping change at the Education Department will kick hundreds of rural school districts out of a federal program that for nearly two decades has funneled funding to some of the most geographically isolated and cash-strapped schools in the United States.

More than 800 schools stand to lose thousands of dollars from the Rural and Low-Income School Program because the department has abruptly changed how districts are to report how many of their students live in poverty. The change, quietly announced in letters to state education leaders, comes after the Education Department said a review of the program revealed that districts had “erroneously” received funding because they had not met eligibility requirements outlined in the federal education law since 2002.

The department’s decision to enforce the tougher criteria drew swift, bipartisan condemnation, and alarmed lawmakers and advocates who questioned why an administration whose political base includes large sections of rural America would initiate such a change — especially in an e******n year. Rural school districts, which serve nearly one in seven public-school students, have long been considered the most underfunded and ignored in the country.

Congressional leaders indicated that they were prepared to take swift action. A spokesman for the Senate committee that oversees education said its chairman, Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, was “very concerned” about the change and working with Senator Susan Collins, Republican of Maine, to “solve this problem for hundreds of rural schools around the country.”

Well, paying for all the golf and rallies has to come from somewhere. You weren't expecting the conman-in-chief to pay for anything were you?

When Congress passes bad laws, the correct thing to do is to CHANGE them, not break them.

Yes, you both have it exactly as trump plays it..

by putting DeVos in charge this sort of thing was sure to happen.

But the orange crowd must love it, they are always demeaning the education system, now they have that change they all wanted..

Funny, it has always appeared to me that the education level of conservatives and Trump supporters is much higher than that of the Trump h**ers, not only on OPP, but also on media programs and other platforms that we are commonly subjected to. To say otherwise flies in the face of pure facts. To make statements like you do and follow Schiff, Pelosi, Nadler and dozens of other l*****ts presents some good opportunities to shake one's head and smile, not only at the hypocrisy of the left, but also at their pure naivety. I keep waiting for logical common sense from the left but none seems to be forthcoming. Now they are blaming Trump for causing the c****av***s. Sad indeed.

No indication of any comments about changing the law other then keep money from the schools.

It worked for nearly 20 years as intended and only the appointment of DeVos with trumps not wanting to pay for anything that may help the working and rural class removed the aid to these schools..

Yes, the orange looking out for their own..

Good morning Bernie..

NO, I do not find anyone blaming trump for the c****av***s... that is a random event..

But I personally do blame trump and company for ending the groups that would have dealt with this national emergency.. cutting the CDC and the emergency response groups that would meet this soon to be P******c was foolish and beyond words..

For decades we have been warned that modern t***sportation and travel make the disease very probable to be a huge catastrophe, making the Spanish flu of 1918 seem minor..

flushing away the needs of American health, while spending us into a huge deficit is the height of short sightedness..

Now I am taking a grandson and my great grandson to the Saturday movie and will be gone for a while, but will catch you later... have a nice day..

Darn, this whole thing is changing the subject of my OP...drat..

Everything I've read, with the exception of that from the leftwing "journalists" and Dem candidates, seems to affirm Trump's efforts. I'm talking about the people who actually are in a position to know about these things with no axe to grind.

I read that the average high school senior today graduates with what would have been considered a rather mediocre 7th grade education in the early seventies when I graduated. Ask a 12th grader today to spell common words without spell check. Hand them a pencil and paper and ask them to extract a simple square root, or convert a decimal to a fraction. Wait for that deer in the headlights look.
These are things that I literally learned in 7th and 8th grade. I was not in some sort of advanced class, either. I was a better than average student, but no brainiac.
This has been going on since Jimmuh Cahtuh foisted the Department of Ejamakashun on us. Our educational system used to be the envy of the world. Now it's the laughingstock. This happened long before Trump; and if you think that throwing money at the problem will fix it look at California or New Jersey.

Newsflash... Congress did not approve Trump's requested budget cuts, so your claim is a lie. The cuts come from on-going programs dating back to your boy Obama.

You're exactly correct with regard to the status of our education system. If anyone doubts it they can search for some of these man-on-the-street interviews conducted by various groups, usually near groups of college students. Granted, these are anecdotal situations but they can be verified by simply being alert around today's youth. They put so much emphasis on being politically correct they leave out the important things
