A man greatly respected by many nations around the world...

I found Obama's words to be the most diplomatic, not surprising since he was the president of Cuba's strongest detractor...

Were the early years of American Independence any better?

At the time of the Cuban revolution people lived under a brutal repressive dictator supported by American organized crime and crooked corporations. Cuba was effectively a banana republic with a local corrupt dictator controlled by wealthy criminal foreigners. Castro’s revolution was fueled by a population that would no longer tolerate their daughters forced into prostitution and sons into prisons or de facto s***ery in the cane fields. At the beginning his cause was righteous and supported by many Americans. The problem came when Castro confiscated property rightly or wrongly claimed by American companies. As Sanders claimed Castro did some good. Cubans have a health care system that is the envy of most developing nations the people also enjoy a high literacy rate, this doesn’t offset the harm done during his reign. The bottom line is still that the majority of Cuban people were better off with Castro than under the Batista dictatorship. The question is why do we support or turn a blind eye to one ruthless dictator while attacking and condemning another?

Well, the people back then were free to leave if they chose to. Not today. And there were huge casinos for
many to work it, which today are crumbling down. Your lack of smarts puts you at a big disadvantage.
As you have the same views as Bernie you see it as fine.

Many of them were supporters of the Batista dictatorship and members of his brutal military, they fled to avoid accountably for their crimes, likely a wise move the people they oppressed would have wanted revenge. There are a number of defectors and of course Castros Marial boat lift where he purged his prisons and insane asylums. Fidels little gift to Ronald Regan.
