Ira Hayes, 22, was a Pima American Indian from the Gila River Reservation in Arizona. Johnny Cash memorialized him in “The Ballad of Ira Hayes,” which recounts his tragic end. In the image, Ira is the soldier furthest left on the end, standing.

"Gather round me people
There's a story I would tell
About a brave young Indian
You should remember well...…..

I rememberance of my father who is long gone now { 1915-1990} but was there as a Navy SeaBee he told me it was impossible to dig a fox hole in that 'volcanic ash' as it just kept filling in.

As he ran off the LST a buddy was shot dead and dad fell over his body into the salt water.
He said " I knew then this was serious s**t".
He never talked about it much further as he just did not want to relive the death and destruction he witnessed.

The original Indian that helped raise the f**g couldn't be found when they did the statue.
Mr. Wells of Dyess Air Force base had to find a substitute Indian.
The poor Indians guilt is what drove him to alcoholism.
His guilt was so great, he used to stay with Mr. Wells weeks at a time.
He had been to Abilene to Mr. Wells just before he died.
I feel sorry for him that he couldn't get over the guilt of not being the Indian to raise the f**g.
