During the State of the Union address Tuesday, President Donald Trump introduced America to Janiyah Davis. Trump introduced the fourth grader from Philadelphia right after he talked about the “countless American children” who are “trapped in failing government schools.” Trump said Janiyah was one of tens of thousands of students on waiting lists for scholarships and she would receive an “opportunity scholarship” to attend the school of her choice.
It was supposed to be a moment to help make the point that school choice should be expanded. But it turns out, Janiyah doesn’t go to a failing school. Not even kind of. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, she attends a competitive charter school that is incredibly difficult to get into. In September, Janiyah Davis entered Math, Science and Technology Community Charter School III. The school, which is independently run but funded by taxpayers, is so popular that it received 6,500 applications for a mere 100 spots next year.
So, why was Janiyah chosen for the scholarship paid for by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos? No one seems to really know. Her mother, Stephanie, said she was “really surprised” when her daughter was named in the State of the Union. “I don’t view MaST as a school you want to get out of at all. I view it as a great opportunity,” Davis said. Before joining the charter school, Janiyah received a partial scholarship for Olney Christian and it was that school’s principal who gave Janiyah’s name when someone called asking about potential candidates for scholarships

As I have said many times before, Trump could find a cure for Cancer, and those on the left would be excoriating him for putting the pharmaceutical industry out of business. Nothing Trump says or does can be viewed in a positive light by the left.

Maybe she is already attending the school she wanted to go to but the SOTU made it appear she hadn't started yet? Janiyah did look confused during the SOTU to me. Hard to believe mom wasn't up to speed before the SOTU but maybe they just paid her scholarship for MaST after the fact if mom was in need of financial assistance.

Trump probably told someone to make it happen and they did, maybe the timeline was messed up by the staff member who wanted to look swift and effective.

Plus her mom is a teacher's assistance, those are usually teachers to be, awaiting certification and a pay raise. One other reason for her acceptance could be to keep MaST stats up. If mom is a teacher's asst., it's logical to assume her daughter's grades would continue to be above average. Mom flew on the plane with both Pence and DeVos. Hard to believe neither clued her in, but it could have happened. Someone didn't follow up on the situation. I expect an explanation will come out soon. Slate and Trib Live both ran the foul-up story.

But in their telephone interview mom stated she didn't agree with several of Trump's policies. That sounds like mom is a Dem and may have kept quiet to embarrass the President but I doubt they'll pull the scholarship.

Why are you c*******ts against school choice and home schooling? Are you afraid that the monies collected from the corrupt teachers unions to pay for l*****t causes and demonrat politicians will begin to dry up? Today you c*******ts fight student/parents rights to get the best unpropagandized education for our kids. You have lost on every issue involving President Trump and your endeavor to take him down as our President. You were shouting about President Trump breaking the Emoluments Clause just a few weeks ago and a federal judge just ruled in favor of Trump and against you c*******ts. When will your bs end kevy boy? Us patriots need to come to your house, start your home schooling education and begin courses on Americanism, Constitutionalism and liberty. Let us teach you some American values and not c*******tic ideology and l*****t religious propaganda.
